Salvation Testimony of a Church Member

God was not looking for perfection; He was looking for imperfection so that His perfection may shine through.

Coming to Know the Lord

As someone who was born into a Christian family, I was exposed to Biblical principles at a very early age. However, despite this, I didn't actually know what it meant to be saved. It wasn't until I entered 1st grade in Cebu Bob Hughes Christian Academy that I truly understood what salvation is.

I don't remember the exact date but it was sometime around December 2015. My teacher asked me the very simple question: "Are you saved?" and I confidently answered "Yes!" With this she proceeded to ask me when I was saved. As a clueless child I didn't actually understand what salvation was — I didn't even understand the question because I thought salvation came naturally to everyone. So with this thought process, I answered: "When I was born."

After hearing this, my teacher kindly explained that this was not how salvation worked and told me that she would explain what salvation was when she had the time. Eventually after a few days, she sat me down at a corner in our classroom and started to explain to me what salvation is. It was then that I understood that salvation is knowing who Christ is and accepting that He died on the cross to save us.

The Struggle with Doubt

However, despite having accepted Christ as my Saviour, I still felt that something was missing and doubts about my salvation still flooded my mind. It wasn't until I heard several preachings, devotionals, and experiences from people who had the same struggles that I realised it was because my spiritual life was stagnant. Despite constantly attending Sunday services, I had yet to develop my personal relationship with Christ.

Upon realising this, I slowly but surely began to build my relationship with God.

Perfectionism and the Breakthrough

However, after having built a personal relationship with God, I still wasn't confident with myself as a Christian. I compared myself to the great evangelists and missionaries I had read about in school and thought that I wasn't doing enough as a Christian yet for ministry or baptism. I honestly don't know why I thought that way, but I mistakenly believed that I had to be a "perfect" Christian to be used by God.

It wasn't until I heard a preaching in August of last year featuring John 1:6-9 that I understood God was not looking for perfection — He was looking for imperfection so that His perfection may shine through.

"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." — John 1:6–9, KJV

John the Baptist was not the Light — he was just a man sent to bear witness of the Light. If God could use an ordinary man like John to prepare the way for the Lord, then surely He can use any of us who are willing, even in our imperfection.

A Heart for Service

My heart's desire is to serve the Lord together with my parents.

Shared with permission and thanksgiving for the Lord's faithful work in every life He touches.
