An Encounter That Changed Lives

A personal encounter with Jesus changes a life, gives salvation, and turns a sinner into a witness.

Preacher: Pastor Matthew Yong
Text: John 4:3–19
Theme: A personal encounter with Jesus changes a life, gives salvation, and turns a sinner into a witness.

1. The Needful Journey of Jesus

John 4:4
“And he must needs go through Samaria.”

Jesus was travelling from Judaea to Galilee, and Samaria lay between them. Most Jews avoided Samaria because of deep hatred between Jews and Samaritans. Yet Jesus “must needs” go there.

This was not merely geographical necessity. It was divine appointment. Jesus went because there was a woman He intended to meet.

Application: Sometimes Jesus comes into our lives at the very moment we need Him most. We may not be looking for Him, but He is seeking us.

2. The Humanity and Compassion of Jesus

John 4:6
“Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well…”

Jesus was tired, thirsty, and hungry. This shows His true humanity. Though He is God, He understands human weakness.

He knows what it means to be weary, thirsty, hungry, rejected, and burdened.

Application: We can come honestly to the Lord with our weakness. He understands our infirmities and cares for us.

3. The Outcast Woman

John 4:7
“There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water…”

The woman came at the sixth hour, around noon. This was not the usual time to draw water. Most women came in the morning or evening when it was cooler.

She likely came alone because she was ashamed and despised by others. Her life was broken, and her reputation was poor.

Yet Jesus did not avoid her. He spoke to her.

Application: Jesus does not reject sinners who are despised by society. He came to seek and to save the lost.

4. The Request of Jesus

John 4:7
“Give me to drink.”

Jesus began with a simple request. He did not condemn her. He did not begin by exposing her sin. He opened a conversation with grace.

The woman was surprised because Jews had no dealings with Samaritans, and Jewish men did not normally speak publicly with women in that culture.

Application: Jesus breaks through racial, social, cultural, and moral barriers to reach sinners.

5. The Gift of God

John 4:10
“If thou knewest the gift of God…”

Jesus pointed her beyond physical water to spiritual life. The “gift of God” speaks of salvation and eternal life.

Ephesians 2:8–9
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Salvation cannot be earned by good works, religion, baptism, church attendance, or personal morality. It is God’s free gift through Jesus Christ.

6. The Living Water

John 4:14
“The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

The woman first misunderstood Jesus. She thought He was speaking of physical water. But Jesus was speaking of spiritual life, eternal life, and the work of God within the soul.

Without the Spirit of God, people cannot understand spiritual truth. Human reasoning alone cannot grasp the things of God.

Application: We must not approach God’s Word merely with human logic. We must compare Scripture with Scripture and depend on the Holy Spirit for understanding.

7. The Exposure of Her Sin

John 4:16
“Go, call thy husband, and come hither.”

Jesus exposed her condition, not to shame her, but to bring her to truth. She answered honestly, “I have no husband.”

Jesus revealed that she had five husbands, and the man she was then living with was not her husband.

Application: Before a person can receive salvation, he must face the truth about sin. Jesus exposes sin in order to save, not to destroy.

8. The Recognition of Jesus

John 4:19
“Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.”

The woman began to understand that Jesus was no ordinary man. Later, Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah.

John 4:26
“Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.”

This is remarkable: Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah to a Samaritan woman who was considered an outcast.

Application: Jesus reveals Himself to humble, needy sinners who are willing to listen.

9. The Changed Life

John 4:28
“The woman then left her waterpot…”

She came for physical water, but after meeting Christ, she left her waterpot behind. Her priorities changed immediately.

She went back to the city and testified of Jesus.

John 4:29
“Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”

She had no formal training, no theological degree, and no high reputation. But she had met Christ, and that was enough for her to witness.

Application: A true encounter with Jesus gives a person a testimony. We may not know everything, but we can tell others what Christ has done for us.

10. The Power of One Witness

John 4:39
“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman…”

One woman’s testimony brought many people to Jesus. Later, many more believed because they heard Jesus’ own word.

John 4:42
“Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves…”

Application: God can use one changed life to reach many others. We should not be afraid to witness, give a tract, share the gospel, or speak of Christ.

Conclusion: Come to the Well of Salvation

Jesus is still calling sinners to come to Him.

Isaiah 55:1
“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters…”

The woman came to the well for water, but she found the Saviour. She came empty and ashamed, but she left changed and bold.

The question is: Have you personally met Jesus?

Do not delay. Today is the day to come to Christ.

Hebrews 3:15
“To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts…”

Main Lessons

  1. Jesus seeks sinners personally.
  2. Jesus understands our weakness.
  3. Jesus saves by grace, not works.
  4. Jesus exposes sin to bring us to salvation.
  5. Jesus changes priorities.
  6. Jesus gives every believer a testimony.
  7. One changed life can influence many others.

Final Challenge

If you are not saved, come to Jesus today.
If you are saved, tell others about Him.

Like the Samaritan woman, say:
“Come, see…”
