Go Forward: The Call to Active Faith
Daily Verse
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:” - Exodus 14:15, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
Forward in Faith
God's word to Moses at the Red Sea was not a command to pray more, but to move. When we face impossible circumstances, the Lord often calls us to step out in faith rather than remain in paralysis. The way forward opens only when we go forward.
A Christian Voice
“Why is it so important that I should behave myself aright as a Christian? Because others who are not saved are watching me. We want to behave ourselves so that people looking at us will see Christ.” - H. A. Ironside
Daily Devotion
The children of Israel stood trapped between the sea and the pursuing Egyptian army. Their situation was utterly hopeless by every human calculation. Yet in that moment of crisis, the Lord spoke a startling word to Moses: 'Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward' (Exodus 14:15). There is a time for crying out to God, and there is a time for obeying God and moving. Moses had been praying, but the Lord redirected his energy from supplication to action — action founded on the promise God had already given.
This text reveals a profound principle of the life of faith: God's commands are often His enablements. He does not tell us to go forward without first preparing a way. The sea did not part until the priests' feet touched the water (Joshua 3:15). The walls of Jericho did not fall until the people shouted (Joshua 6:20). Faith is not passive agreement with truth; it is active obedience that trusts God to meet us in the step we take. To stand still when God says 'go forward' is unbelief dressed in the garments of piety.
H. A. Ironside wrote, 'Why is it so important that I should behave myself aright as a Christian? Because others who are not saved are watching me. We want to behave ourselves so that people looking at us will see Christ.' This is the fruit of a forward-walking faith. When the world sees believers paralyzed by fear or complacent in comfort, they see no difference between the church and the world. But when they see a people who move boldly in obedience to God's Word — who step into impossible situations trusting that God has already gone before them — they behold the reality of a living Saviour who makes a way where there is no way.
What sea stands before you today? A broken relationship? A financial impossibility? A calling that seems beyond your strength? The Lord does not despise your cries, but He invites you to something greater: to go forward. The water will not part until you take the step. The enemy will not be vanquished until you raise the shout. Your part is to move in faith; God's part is to make a way. And He who parted the Red Sea is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have cried out to You while refusing to move forward in obedience. You have given me Your Word, Your promises, and Your Spirit — yet I so often stand still, waiting for circumstances to change before I take the step of faith. Lord, grant me the courage to go forward when You command it. Help me to trust that You go before me, that the path opens under my feet as I walk in obedience. May my life be a testimony to those who watch me that Christ is real, that His way is sure, and that He is faithful to complete what He has begun. In the name of Jesus, who went forward to the cross for my salvation, Amen.
Walk in faith today
Identify one area where you have been praying without acting — a step God has clearly shown you but you have hesitated to take. Before the day ends, take that step, however small, and trust God to meet you in your obedience.
