Possible Only with God

What human strength cannot accomplish, divine grace can do. When we face the impossibility of changing our own hearts, saving a soul, or faithfully enduring a trial, Christ directs our confidence away from ourselves and toward God.

And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. These words were spoken after the rich young ruler departed sorrowful, unwilling to release the possessions that ruled his heart. The disciples were astonished and asked who could be saved. Jesus did not answer by suggesting that salvation was merely difficult or that greater human effort might finally attain it. He declared it impossible with men. No one can remove his own guilt, give life to his own soul, or produce the righteousness that God requires. Our deepest need therefore confronts us with an impossibility, but it is precisely there that the power and grace of God are revealed.

The Lord delights to work where human pride must surrender. We naturally prefer problems that we can solve, burdens that we can carry, and victories for which we can claim some credit. God, however, often permits us to reach the end of our wisdom, strength, or resources so that we learn to depend wholly upon Him. This does not mean that every desire we call impossible will be granted. God is not promising to fulfil every ambition, remove every hardship, or arrange every circumstance according to our plans. He is declaring that no obstacle can prevent Him from accomplishing His holy will. What is beyond human ability remains entirely within His sovereign power.

This truth should lead us neither to passivity nor presumption, but to prayerful obedience. We cannot convert another person, yet we can faithfully speak of Christ, live consistently before others, and pray for God to awaken the heart. We cannot sanctify ourselves by determination alone, yet we must yield to the Lord, turn from known sin, and obey His Word in dependence upon His grace. We may be unable to repair every broken relationship or resolve every painful circumstance, but we can take the next righteous step and entrust the outcome to God. Faith obeys where God has spoken and rests where only God can act.

H. A. Ironside reminded Christians that those who are not saved are watching how we behave and should be able to see Christ in us. Such a life may seem impossible when we consider our weakness, impatience, fear, and remaining sin. Yet the God who saves also transforms His people. Our conduct does not earn salvation, but it should bear witness to the grace we have received. When believers respond to pressure with patience, confess wrong without excuse, forgive those who offend them, and remain truthful when dishonesty would be easier, others receive a living testimony to Christ. Let every impossibility drive us away from self-confidence and toward humble dependence upon God, whose power is sufficient to accomplish all that He commands.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess that I am unable to save, change, or sustain myself by my own strength. Forgive me for trusting in my wisdom, resources, and determination instead of resting in Thy power and grace. Teach me to distinguish between my own desires and Thy holy will, and keep me from both unbelief and presumption. Where obedience seems difficult, strengthen me to take the next faithful step. Where only Thou canst work, help me to wait and pray without losing heart. Transform my conduct so that those who watch my life may see the patience, truth, mercy, and holiness of Christ. Accomplish in me what is impossible with man, for Thy glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
