The Finished Sacrifice

Christ offered Himself once for all and then sat down, declaring that the work required for our salvation was complete. Our assurance rests not in the strength of our performance, but in the perfect and sufficient sacrifice of our risen Lord.

Under the old covenant, priests stood daily offering sacrifices that could never finally take away sins. Their continual standing testified that their work was never complete. Jesus Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins for ever and sat down at the right hand of God. His seated position declares the sufficiency and finality of His saving work. Nothing remains to be added to His sacrifice, and nothing offered by human hands can improve it. The Lord Jesus bore the full judgment that our sins deserved, satisfied divine justice, and opened the way for sinners to draw near to God. Salvation is therefore not a joint accomplishment in which Christ supplies most and we complete the rest. It is the finished work of the Son of God, received by faith.

This truth brings deep assurance to every believer who is troubled by guilt or conscious of weakness. Our acceptance before God does not rise and fall with our emotions, nor does it depend upon maintaining a flawless record. Christ's offering has perfected for ever them that are sanctified. This does not mean that Christians become sinlessly perfect in their daily conduct. Scripture plainly calls us to confess sin, pursue holiness, and grow in grace. It means that the sacrifice securing our standing before God is eternally complete. Those whom God has set apart in Christ possess a perfect acceptance founded upon His righteousness and blood. When conscience accuses us, we must not excuse our sin; but neither should we seek another payment. We confess it and return in faith to the one sufficient sacrifice.

Christ is seated, but He is not inactive. He reigns at the Father's right hand and awaits the certain defeat of every enemy. Sin, Satan, rebellion, and death will not have the final word. The Saviour who once suffered in humility now occupies the place of honour and authority, and all things will be brought beneath His feet. This gives His people courage to persevere. We may face temptation, grief, opposition, and the painful consequences of living in a fallen world, yet none of these can overturn what Christ has accomplished. His sacrifice is finished, His position is secure, and His victory is certain. Christian hope is not wishful thinking; it is confidence in the enthroned Christ whose promises cannot fail.

Such grace should produce grateful surrender rather than careless living. David Brainerd wrote, “I have received my all from God. Oh, that I could return my all to God.” We cannot repay the price of redemption, and we must never imagine that our service earns the salvation Christ purchased. Yet the proper response to mercy is to offer ourselves willingly to the One who gave Himself for us. Because we are accepted, we may obey without trying to prove our worth. Because we are forgiven, we may repent honestly without hiding. Because Christ's sacrifice is sufficient, we may serve with humility rather than pride. Let the finished work of Jesus quiet your conscience, strengthen your hope, and move your heart toward wholehearted devotion today.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I praise Thee for offering Thyself once for all as the perfect sacrifice for my sins. Forgive me for looking to my feelings, efforts, or record for an assurance that can be found only in Thee. Teach me to rest in Thy finished work without becoming careless about holiness. When my conscience accuses me, lead me to honest confession and renewed faith in Thy sufficient blood. Strengthen me to resist sin, endure hardship, and remember that every enemy shall finally be placed beneath Thy feet. Thou hast given me everything necessary for life and salvation; help me now to give myself willingly to Thee in grateful obedience. May my words, choices, and service honour Thee today. Amen.

Walk in faith today

When guilt or inadequacy arises today, pause and thank Christ aloud for His one sufficient sacrifice; then confess any known sin and obey Him in one specific matter you have been delaying.
