The Gospel message
How Can I Be Saved?
God’s Word shows that salvation is not earned by our works, but received by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.
The most important question a person can ask is not merely, “How can I improve my life?” or “How can I become religious?” but this:
How can I be saved?
The Bible gives a clear answer. Salvation is God’s gift to sinners through the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not earned by good works, church attendance, religious effort, or personal merit. It is received by faith — by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ.
“And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” - Acts 16:30-31, KJV
1. We must understand our need: all have sinned
The Bible tells us plainly that every person has sinned against God. Sin is not only outward wrongdoing; it is also the inward condition of a heart that has turned from God’s holy will.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” - Romans 3:23, KJV
Because God is holy and just, sin has a serious consequence. The problem of sin cannot be solved by trying harder, comparing ourselves with others, or covering it with religious activity.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” - Romans 6:23, KJV
The bad news is that we are sinners before God. The good news is that God has provided a Saviour.
2. God loved us and sent His Son
The Gospel begins with God’s love and God’s initiative. We did not climb up to God by our goodness. God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to save sinners.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” - John 3:16, KJV
Jesus Christ is not merely a teacher, prophet, or moral example. He is the Son of God, the only Saviour, and the only way to the Father.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” - John 14:6, KJV
3. Christ died for our sins and rose again
The Gospel message centers on what Christ has done. He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again according to the Scriptures.
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, KJV
At the cross, the Lord Jesus Christ took the sinner’s place. God’s love was shown not when we were worthy, but when we were helpless and sinful.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8, KJV
His resurrection declares that His work is sufficient and that He is the living Saviour.
4. Salvation is by grace through faith, not by works
Many people think they must earn salvation. But the Bible teaches that salvation is by grace. Grace means God’s undeserved favour. We receive salvation through faith, not by trusting in ourselves.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9, KJV
Good works cannot purchase salvation. Rather, good works are the fruit of a life that has been saved by God’s grace.
To believe on Christ is to trust Him — to rely on who He is and what He has done. It is not merely knowing facts about Jesus, but personally receiving Him as Saviour and Lord.
5. The Bible calls us to repent and believe
The Gospel calls for a response. We are to turn from sin and self-righteousness and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
“Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” - Acts 20:21, KJV
Repentance is not trying to clean yourself up before coming to Christ. It is a change of mind and heart toward God — agreeing with God about your sin and turning to Him for mercy. Faith is resting your soul upon Christ alone.
6. Call upon the Lord
The promise of God’s Word is clear and gracious: those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” - Romans 10:9, KJV
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” - Romans 10:13, KJV
A prayer cannot save you by itself, as if words were a ritual. Christ saves. But if you truly desire to come to Him, you may call upon Him from your heart.
You might pray in this way:
Lord God, I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself. I believe that Jesus Christ, Thy Son, died for my sins and rose again. I turn from trusting in myself and I trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone. Please forgive me, save me, and make me Thine. Amen.
7. Rest in God’s promise
If you have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, your assurance rests not in your feelings, but in the promise of God’s Word.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” - John 5:24, KJV
Salvation is not a vague hope that maybe God will accept you someday. In Christ, the believer has everlasting life because God has promised it.
What should I do now?
If you have believed on Christ, begin to walk with Him:
- Read the Bible daily, beginning with the Gospel of John.
- Pray honestly to God in Jesus’ name.
- Thank God for saving grace.
- Seek fellowship with faithful believers in a Bible-believing church.
- Tell someone that you are trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Continue learning God’s Word and obeying what He shows you.
“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” - 2 Corinthians 6:2, KJV
If God’s Word has shown you your need of salvation, do not delay. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.
