His Peace in a Troubled World
Daily Verse
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - John 14:27, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
The Peace Christ Gives
Jesus does not promise a life without trouble; He gives His own peace to sustain us within it. Because our crucified and risen Saviour holds us fast, we can bring Him our fears and take the next faithful step without knowing every outcome.

Daily Devotion
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27, KJV. Jesus spoke these words on the night before His crucifixion. His disciples were facing a separation they did not understand, and their expectations were about to be shaken. Yet the One who knew the suffering ahead spoke of giving peace. This was not a comforting phrase offered from a safe distance. Their Saviour would go to the cross, bear the judgment sinners deserve, and rise again. The peace He promised rested upon His person and His saving work, not upon the disciples’ ability to understand what was happening.
Notice how personally Jesus describes His gift: “my peace I give unto you”. The world can offer temporary relief when circumstances improve, resources seem sufficient, or other people approve of us. Such relief is fragile because its foundations can change overnight. Christ gives something deeper: peace with God through Himself, and the sustaining assurance that we belong to Him. This does not mean believers never experience anxiety, grief, or sleepless nights. A troubled feeling is not proof that Christ has abandoned us. His promise directs us away from measuring His faithfulness by our emotions. We may come to Him honestly, naming the burdens we carry, while trusting that His love and authority remain unchanged. His peace can sustain us even while a difficult situation remains unresolved.
The command, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,” calls us to respond to His promise with faith. We cannot always prevent a fearful thought from arriving, but we need not receive it as the final authority over our lives. We can answer it with what Christ has said, seek His help in prayer, and obey what He has already made clear. Sometimes that obedience will mean speaking truth gently, asking forgiveness, refusing a dishonest shortcut, or doing an ordinary duty while the future remains uncertain. Peace is not an excuse to avoid responsibility or ignore danger. It frees us to act faithfully without demanding control of every result. We entrust the outcome to our Lord while attending to the work He has placed before us.
Jim Elliot wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” His words help expose how easily we seek security in things we cannot finally preserve: possessions, recognition, comfort, or even our carefully arranged plans. These are not strong enough to carry the weight of our deepest confidence. Christ is. Receiving His peace may therefore involve surrendering our insistence that life must follow our preferred course before we can rest in Him. Today, bring one particular fear into His presence. Do not pretend it is small, and do not assume you must solve it before you pray. Remember who is speaking in this verse. The Saviour who gave Himself for His people is trustworthy with their present troubles and their eternal future.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving a peace that the world cannot provide. You know the fears I speak about and those I keep hidden. Forgive me for treating control, comfort, or the approval of others as my refuge. Help me to rest in Your finished work and to trust Your faithful care when circumstances remain difficult. By Your Holy Spirit, turn my attention from anxious predictions to Your sure promises. Give me wisdom to do what is right, humility to receive help, and courage to obey without demanding to know the outcome. Make me gentle toward others who are troubled, so that my words and actions point them to You. Keep my heart near You today. Amen.
Walk in faith today
Name one worry before the Lord in prayer, read John 14:27 aloud, and take one specific step of obedience you have been postponing because of that fear.
