His Peace in a Troubled World

Saturday, 24 October 2026

Daily Verse

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - John 14:27, KJV

Thoughts for the Day

The Peace Christ Gives

Jesus does not promise a life untouched by trouble; He gives His own peace to sustain us within it. Because our crucified and risen Saviour holds us securely, we can bring Him our fears and take the next faithful step without knowing every outcome.

Daily Devotion

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” — John 14:27, KJV. Jesus spoke these words on the night before His crucifixion. His disciples were facing a separation they could scarcely understand, and their familiar world was about to be shaken. Yet Jesus did not offer them an empty assurance that nothing painful would happen. He gave them something far stronger: His own peace. The One who knew the cross lay before Him was caring for the hearts of those He loved. His promise teaches us to look beyond favourable circumstances to the faithful Saviour who remains with His people.

The world commonly offers peace through things that can be taken away: sufficient money, good health, agreeable relationships, or control over tomorrow. These are not all wrong to desire, but none can bear the weight of our deepest trust. Christ gives differently. His peace rests upon who He is and what He has accomplished. Through His death and resurrection, believers are reconciled to God; our sins are forgiven, and we belong to Him. In this same chapter, Jesus promises the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, who would teach His disciples and bring His words to their remembrance. They would not be abandoned. Christian peace is therefore more than a calmer mood. It is the settled security of belonging to God through His Son, even when our emotions remain unsettled.

When Jesus says, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,” He is not treating sorrow lightly or demanding that we pretend to feel strong. He knows how deeply uncertainty can disturb us. His command calls us to trust His word rather than surrender our hearts to fear. We may need to do this repeatedly throughout a difficult day. A troubling message arrives; we bring it to Him. An old anxiety returns; we remember His promise. A responsibility feels too heavy; we ask for grace to fulfil the duty immediately before us. Prayer does not require polished words, and faith does not require the absence of tears. We can honestly name our fears while refusing to make those fears our final authority.

Jim Elliot wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” His words help us consider where we are seeking security. If peace depends on keeping every comfort and controlling every outcome, our hearts will always be vulnerable to the next change. But Christ Himself is a treasure that loss cannot remove. This does not make earthly grief unreal; it gives grief a different horizon. Today, receiving Christ’s peace may mean surrendering one demand that life must unfold according to our plan. It may mean making a necessary apology, speaking truth gently, or continuing a quiet duty without immediate reassurance. We do not obey in order to purchase His peace. We obey because the Saviour who gives it is trustworthy. Let His promise steady your heart, and leave the outcome in His hands.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving a peace that this world cannot provide. You know the worries I carry and the ways I try to secure my life apart from trusting You. Forgive my unbelief, and teach me to rest in Your finished work and faithful care. By Your Holy Spirit, bring Your words to my remembrance when fear rises. Help me neither to hide my sorrow nor to let anxiety govern my choices. Give me grace to fulfil today’s responsibilities, speak gently to others, and surrender what I cannot control. Comfort those facing grief, uncertainty, or loneliness, and make me attentive to their needs. Keep my heart near You, whatever this day brings. Amen.

Walk in faith today

Name one worry before the Lord, read John 14:27 aloud, and then carry out one specific responsibility you have been postponing because of that fear, entrusting the outcome to Him.
