His Peace in a Troubled World
Daily Verse
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - John 14:27, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
The Peace Christ Gives
Christ does not promise a life without trouble; He gives His own peace to sustain us within it. Because our Saviour is faithful, we can bring Him our fears and obey His Word without waiting for every uncertainty to disappear.
A Christian Voice
“The reason why the Church cannot overcome the enemy is because she doesn't know how to use the sword of the Spirit. People are trying to fight the devil with theories and pet ideas, but he will get the victory over them every time. What we want is to draw the sword of the Spirit.” - D. L. Moody
Daily Devotion
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27, KJV. Jesus spoke these words to His disciples as the cross drew near. They were facing a separation they did not yet understand, and their hearts were unsettled. Yet the Lord did not offer an empty reassurance that nothing painful would happen. He offered something far greater: His own peace. The One who knew the suffering ahead was also the One who could sustain them through it. His promise teaches us to look beyond favourable circumstances to the faithful Saviour who remains with His people.
The world often offers peace through favourable conditions: enough money, good health, approval from others, or a clear answer to every question. Such comforts may be welcome, but they cannot bear the full weight of our souls. They can change suddenly, and even when we possess them, our hearts may remain anxious. Christ’s peace rests on a firmer foundation. Through His death and resurrection, He brings those who believe in Him into a right relationship with God. Our deepest need is not merely relief from pressure, but forgiveness and reconciliation with our Creator. Having received mercy through Christ, we are no longer left to face life as though everything depends upon our own strength. We belong to a Lord whose love is not overturned by our circumstances.
When Jesus says, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,” He is not treating human sorrow lightly. He knows our weakness and calls us to trust Him in the midst of it. His command invites a response of faith: bringing our fears before Him, remembering what He has said, and refusing to let anxiety become our guide. This is where Scripture matters deeply. D. L. Moody’s call to draw the sword of the Spirit reminds us that personal theories and cherished opinions are no substitute for God’s Word. We do not answer temptation, accusation, or fear merely by telling ourselves to feel better. We turn to the truth God has given, receiving its correction as well as its comfort. Christ’s peace strengthens obedience; it does not excuse us from it.
Today, the trouble before you may be a family concern, an uncertain decision, a difficult conversation, or a burden that has remained for many months. You need not pretend that it is small. Bring it honestly to the Lord, and let His promise speak more firmly than your fearful predictions. Read this verse slowly, remembering who speaks it and what He accomplished at the cross. Then take the next faithful step that His Word makes clear. Perhaps that means speaking truth gently, asking forgiveness, fulfilling a neglected responsibility, or leaving an outcome you cannot control in His hands. Peace may not arrive as an immediate change of feeling. Nevertheless, Christ’s gift remains trustworthy. You can obey Him while your emotions are still unsettled, resting in the Saviour who gives what the world cannot give.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving Your peace to troubled hearts. Forgive me for seeking security in circumstances and for allowing fear to direct my thoughts and choices. Thank You that through Your death and resurrection I may receive forgiveness and be reconciled to God. Help me to believe Your Word when my feelings are unsettled. Teach me to bring my concerns honestly before You, to resist temptation with the truth of Scripture, and to obey what You have made clear. Give me gentleness toward others who are carrying heavy burdens. Whether my circumstances change today or remain difficult, keep me resting in Your faithful care. Let Your peace strengthen me to love, serve, and honour You. Amen.
Walk in faith today
Bring one specific worry to Christ in prayer, read John 14:27 aloud, and then take one clear step of obedience you have been postponing because of that fear.
