Strength for Those Who Wait

Waiting upon the Lord is not passive resignation, but active trust in His wisdom, faithfulness, and perfect timing. When our own strength is exhausted, God teaches us to depend upon His unfailing grace and supplies what we need to keep walking faithfully.

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.” These words were given to people who could easily have felt forgotten, weary, and overwhelmed. Yet Isaiah directs their attention away from the weakness of man and toward the everlasting God, whose understanding is unsearchable and whose strength never diminishes. To wait upon the Lord is to place our confidence in His character when we cannot yet see the outcome of our circumstances. It is to remain before Him in prayer, submit to His Word, and trust that He is neither late nor careless concerning His children.

Waiting often reveals where we have been seeking strength. We may depend upon our plans, experience, resources, or determination until these supports prove insufficient. The Lord sometimes permits us to reach the end of our own ability so that we learn the sufficiency of His grace. Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “I am a Christian solely and entirely because of the grace of God and not because of anything that I have thought or said or done.” That same grace which saves us also sustains us. The Christian life is not begun by grace and then continued by self-reliance. From beginning to end, we stand because God is faithful, and we receive strength by looking to Him rather than boasting in ourselves.

The renewed strength promised in this verse does not always mean that the burden will immediately disappear. Sometimes God enables His people to rise above a trial with unusual courage, like an eagle mounting upon the wind. At other times He gives endurance for a demanding season, enabling them to run without becoming spiritually exhausted. Often His strength is seen in the quiet faithfulness of continuing to walk without fainting. The order is instructive: soaring, running, and walking all require divine strength. We may long for a dramatic deliverance, while the Lord is glorified through daily obedience—praying, serving, forgiving, resisting temptation, and fulfilling ordinary responsibilities with a heart that trusts Him.

If you are weary today, do not interpret your weakness as proof that God has abandoned you. Bring your weariness honestly before Him. Wait upon Him by remembering what Scripture declares, seeking Him in prayer, and refusing to run ahead through anxious self-effort. His promise is not that those who understand everything shall renew their strength, but that those who wait upon the Lord shall do so. The strength He supplies is suited to the path He appoints. Whether He calls you to mount up, to run, or simply to take the next faithful step, His grace will be sufficient. Rest your confidence not in the firmness of your grasp upon Him, but in the faithfulness of His hold upon you.

Prayer

Everlasting Lord, I confess that I often become impatient, anxious, and weary when Thy purposes are not clear to me. Forgive me for depending upon my own understanding and strength instead of resting in Thy wisdom and grace. Teach me to wait upon Thee with a quiet and obedient heart. Renew my strength for every duty Thou hast appointed, and keep me from running ahead of Thy leading or fainting beneath the burdens of this day. Help me to trust Thy character when I cannot see Thy plan. Whether Thou dost call me to soar, to run, or simply to walk faithfully, sustain me by Thy grace and glorify Thy name through my life. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
