Strength for Those Who Wait

Waiting upon the Lord is not passive resignation; it is trusting Him, seeking Him, and refusing to run ahead of His will. As Billy Sunday said, “We have a God who delights in impossibilities,” and no weakness or difficulty is beyond His power to sustain His people.

Isaiah spoke to people who were tempted to think that their way was hidden from God and their troubles had escaped His notice. The answer was not confidence in human ability, but a renewed vision of the everlasting God. He does not faint, grow weary, or become confused by the circumstances that overwhelm us. We become exhausted because we are limited; the Lord remains strong because His power and wisdom are without measure. Therefore, waiting upon Him begins with turning our attention away from the size of our burden and toward the greatness of the One who carries His people. God has not forgotten His children, even when His help seems delayed or His purposes remain difficult to understand.

To wait upon the Lord is more than merely allowing time to pass. It is an active posture of faith expressed through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedient dependence. We wait when we bring our needs honestly before God and trust Him to answer according to His perfect wisdom. We wait when we refuse to force a solution through impatience, fear, or compromise. We wait when we continue doing the duty already placed before us, although we cannot yet see what God will do next. Such waiting is not wasted time. The Lord uses it to expose self-reliance, deepen our confidence in His character, and teach us that His presence is a greater treasure than immediate relief.

The promised renewal does not mean that believers will never feel physically tired, emotionally burdened, or deeply sorrowful. Rather, God supplies strength sufficient for the path He appoints. At times He enables His people to mount up with unusual courage, like eagles rising above the storm. At other times He gives endurance to run through demanding seasons without abandoning the course. Most often, perhaps, He provides grace simply to walk faithfully through ordinary responsibilities without fainting. Each expression of strength comes from the same faithful Lord. Billy Sunday observed, “We have a God who delights in impossibilities.” What is impossible for our wisdom, discipline, or resources is never beyond the sovereign power of God.

Our surest evidence of God’s sustaining grace is found in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Christ accomplished the salvation that sinners could never achieve for themselves. Those who trust Him are reconciled to God, upheld by His grace, and given a hope that suffering cannot destroy. We may therefore wait without despair, because our future does not rest upon changing circumstances but upon the risen Lord. Perhaps today you need strength for a heavy trial; perhaps you need patience in an unanswered prayer or faithfulness in a quiet duty. Do not measure God’s care by the speed of His answer. Look to Him, continue in obedience, and receive today’s strength for today’s path. The Lord who calls you to wait is the Lord who promises to renew.

Prayer

Everlasting Father, Thou knowest how quickly my strength fails and how easily impatience enters my heart. Forgive me for relying upon myself, running ahead of Thy will, or doubting Thy care when answers are delayed. Teach me to wait upon Thee with humble, active faith. Fix my thoughts upon Thy power, wisdom, and unfailing goodness. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen me to obey the duty before me, endure hardship without murmuring, and resist every temptation to compromise. Give me grace to trust Thy timing and to recognize Thy sustaining hand in both extraordinary trials and ordinary responsibilities. Renew my strength today, and let my life bear quiet witness that Thou art faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Set aside ten uninterrupted minutes today to read Isaiah 40:27-31, name one burden you have been trying to carry in your own strength, surrender it specifically to the Lord in prayer, and then faithfully complete the next clear duty before you.
