The Finished Work of Christ

Christ offered Himself once for all and then sat down, declaring that the work of atonement was complete. Because our salvation rests upon His perfect sacrifice rather than our imperfect efforts, we may draw near to God with humble confidence and follow Him faithfully: “Forward Ever, Backward Never!”

Under the old covenant, priests repeatedly offered sacrifices because those sacrifices could never finally remove sin. Their work continued day after day, reminding the people both of the seriousness of sin and of their need for a better sacrifice. Jesus Christ, however, did what no earthly priest and no animal offering could accomplish. He offered Himself—holy, willing, and without blemish—as the sufficient sacrifice for sinners. His death was not one contribution among many toward our salvation. It was the decisive and complete atoning work by which the demands of divine justice were satisfied. Nothing can be added to His blood, and nothing needs to be repeated. The believer’s hope therefore rests not upon religious effort, personal merit, or emotional certainty, but upon the finished work of the Son of God.

After offering one sacrifice for sins for ever, Christ sat down at the right hand of God. An earthly priest remained standing because his ministry of sacrifice was never finished. Christ sat down because His sacrificial work was complete, and because He reigns in honour and authority beside the Father. His present position assures us that the cross was neither a defeat nor an unfinished attempt to rescue humanity. The crucified Lord is the risen and enthroned King. He now waits until every enemy is placed beneath His feet. Sin, Satan, death, and every power opposed to God will not have the final word. Although believers still live amid temptation, suffering, and spiritual conflict, we do so under the reign of a victorious Saviour whose triumph is certain.

The declaration that Christ has “perfected for ever them that are sanctified” gives deep assurance to every believer. This does not mean that Christians have already become sinless in daily conduct. Scripture and experience both teach that we still need correction, confession, growth, and daily dependence upon grace. It means that Christ’s one offering has secured our acceptance before God completely and permanently. Those whom God is sanctifying are not trying to earn a place in His family; they are being transformed because Christ has already brought them near. Our standing rests upon His perfection, not ours. When conscience accuses us, we must not excuse our sin, but neither should we imagine that our repentance must complete what Christ left unfinished. We confess honestly, turn from sin, and look again to the sufficient sacrifice of Jesus.

Such assurance does not produce carelessness; it produces grateful obedience. Because Christ has fully given Himself for us, we are called to give ourselves faithfully to Him. C. T. Studd’s words, “Forward Ever, Backward Never!” aptly express the direction of a life captured by the grace of Christ. We do not go backward to trusting our works, living under condemnation, or making peace with sins from which Christ came to deliver us. We press forward in faith, holiness, service, and hope—not to purchase salvation, but because salvation has been purchased at an immeasurable price. Today we may face our duties, weaknesses, and trials with quiet confidence: the sacrifice is complete, the Saviour is enthroned, His enemies will be defeated, and all who belong to Him are held securely in the saving worth of His one offering.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I praise Thee for offering Thyself as the one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for sin. Forgive me for looking to my efforts, feelings, or goodness for an assurance that can be found only in Thy finished work. Teach me to confess my sins honestly while resting confidently in the cleansing power of Thy blood. Thank Thee that Thou art risen, enthroned, and victorious, and that no enemy can overturn Thy purpose. Continue Thy sanctifying work in me, making my conduct increasingly consistent with the salvation Thou hast secured. Give me grace to move forward in faith and obedience today, refusing both condemnation and complacency. May my life honour Thee with gratitude, humility, holiness, and steadfast hope. Amen.

Identify one area where guilt, self-reliance, or a recurring sin has been drawing you backward; confess it plainly to God, thank Christ aloud for His sufficient sacrifice, and take one specific act of obedience in that area today.
