A Workman Approved unto God

God calls us to handle His Word with diligence, humility, and care. The faithful workman seeks not merely to know Scripture, but to understand it rightly, obey it sincerely, and teach it truthfully.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God” is a call to earnest spiritual labour. Paul was addressing Timothy as a servant entrusted with the truth, but the principle applies to every believer who reads, shares, or teaches Scripture. We are not to approach the Bible casually, looking only for words that confirm our opinions or soothe our present feelings. We come as learners before the living God, asking what He has actually spoken. Our first concern must not be the approval of people, the appearance of knowledge, or the praise of those who hear us. We study because we desire to stand approved before God, whose judgment is perfectly true.

The image of a workman reminds us that faithful handling of Scripture requires effort, patience, and discipline. A skilled worker does not treat his tools carelessly or rush through an important task. In the same way, the Christian must read attentively, consider the setting, follow the argument, compare Scripture with Scripture, and resist the temptation to build doctrine upon an isolated phrase. We must also distinguish between what the text says and what we merely assume it says. Prayerful dependence upon the Holy Spirit does not replace careful study; rather, it produces the humility, teachability, and obedience with which careful study should be undertaken.

To be a workman “that needeth not to be ashamed” does not mean that we will understand every passage immediately or never need correction. It means that we labour honestly and faithfully, refusing to twist the Word for personal advantage. Shame belongs to careless teaching, selective obedience, and confident claims that go beyond what God has revealed. A faithful workman is willing to say, “I need to study this further,” and is ready to receive correction from Scripture. The goal is not to win arguments but to serve Christ and His people. Truth must be handled accurately, spoken graciously, and demonstrated through a life brought under its authority.

David Brainerd wrote, “I have received my all from God. Oh, that I could return my all to God.” That longing should shape our use of Scripture. God has graciously given us His Word, not merely to fill our minds with information, but to conform our hearts and lives to His will. Therefore, rightly dividing the word of truth includes rightly responding to it. When Scripture exposes sin, we repent. When it gives a command, we obey. When it reveals a promise, we trust the God who gave it. When it teaches us about Christ, we worship Him. Let us bring our attention, abilities, habits, and influence before the Lord, seeking to become faithful workmen whose study leads to sound doctrine, holy living, and loving service.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank Thee for giving us Thy Word, which is true, sufficient, and worthy of our careful attention. Forgive us for the times we have read it carelessly, used it to support our own opinions, or heard it without obeying. Give us humble and teachable hearts. Help us to study diligently, understand faithfully, and rightly divide the word of truth. Guard us from pride, error, and the desire for human praise. May Thy truth correct our thinking, expose our sin, strengthen our faith, and shape our conduct. Make us workmen who need not be ashamed, faithful in what we believe, teach, and practise. Having received all from Thee, teach us to return our all to Thee. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
