A Workman Approved of God

God calls us to handle His Word with diligence, humility, and faithfulness—not merely to gather knowledge, but to know Him and obey His truth. A workman approved of God studies carefully, teaches accurately, and lives so that others may see Christ.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God” is a solemn call to every believer who opens the Scriptures. Paul presents the Christian as a workman standing before God, accountable for the manner in which he handles divine truth. The first concern of this workman is not the applause of men, the appearance of intelligence, or victory in an argument. His desire is to be approved unto God. Such approval cannot be earned by casual reading or careless interpretation. It requires reverence, prayer, patient study, and a heart willing to submit to whatever the Lord has spoken. We do not sit in judgment upon Scripture; Scripture searches and judges us.

To be “rightly dividing the word of truth” means handling God’s Word accurately and faithfully. Every passage should be understood in its proper setting, with careful attention to what it truly says rather than what we would like it to say. We must not isolate verses to support our preferences, soften truths that confront us, or promise what God has not promised. The Bible contains history, prophecy, poetry, doctrine, commands, warnings, and promises, all united in God’s redemptive purpose and centred upon the Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful study therefore asks: Who is speaking? To whom was this given? What does the passage teach? How does it agree with the rest of Scripture? How should its truth shape my faith and obedience?

The workman who needeth not to be ashamed is not necessarily the person with the largest library or the most impressive vocabulary. He is the believer who approaches the Bible honestly, receives correction humbly, and refuses to twist God’s Word for personal advantage. Knowledge without obedience can produce pride, but truth received in faith produces holiness, love, discernment, and endurance. Before we use a passage to correct another person, we should allow it to examine our own hearts. Before teachers speak publicly, they should labour privately in prayer and study. Whether we teach a congregation, lead a small group, instruct our children, or encourage one friend, we must remember that we are speaking about the things of God.

Our handling of Scripture is also displayed in our conduct. H. A. Ironside observed that unbelievers watch how Christians behave and that we should live so they may see Christ in us. Sound interpretation and faithful living must remain together. If our words are doctrinally precise while our lives are harsh, dishonest, or unrepentant, we misrepresent the truth we profess. Yet when the Word dwells richly within us, it forms patience in difficulty, integrity in private, grace in speech, and love toward others. Let us therefore study not merely to become informed, but to become faithful workmen—believers who know the truth, obey the truth, teach the truth carefully, and point others to Christ without shame.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank Thee for giving us Thy holy and trustworthy Word. Forgive me for the times I have approached it carelessly, read it selectively, or failed to obey what Thou hast plainly shown me. Give me a humble heart, a disciplined mind, and a sincere desire to be approved unto Thee rather than praised by men. Teach me to understand each passage faithfully and to handle the word of truth without distortion. Guard me from pride, error, and empty knowledge. Let Thy truth shape my speech, choices, relationships, and private conduct, so that those who watch my life may see the character of Christ. Make me a diligent and unashamed workman, faithful in both doctrine and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
