Finished for Ever

Christ’s one sacrifice fully accomplished what no repeated offering could ever achieve. Because He has perfected for ever them that are sanctified, believers may rest in His finished work while walking faithfully in the holiness He produces.

Under the old covenant, priests stood daily ministering and repeatedly offering sacrifices that could never fully take away sins. Jesus Christ, however, offered Himself as the one perfect and sufficient sacrifice. Hebrews declares, “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.” His seated position proclaims that the work required for our redemption is finished. No further sacrifice is needed, and nothing can be added to the precious blood He shed at Calvary. The believer’s hope therefore rests not upon personal merit, religious performance, or changing feelings, but upon the completed work of the Son of God.

Christ also sits at the right hand of God, the place of honour and authority, awaiting the certain subjection of all His enemies. The cross did not represent defeat; it secured an everlasting victory. Sin was answered, Satan’s claim was broken, death’s power was overcome, and the risen Christ now reigns. Although we still live amid opposition, temptation, suffering, and spiritual conflict, none of these can overturn His triumph. His enemies will become His footstool according to the settled purpose of God. Christians do not fight to make Christ victorious; we stand by faith in the victory He has already won, trusting that every promise concerning His kingdom will be fulfilled.

The words “he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” give deep assurance. To be perfected does not mean that believers never stumble or that spiritual growth is unnecessary. It means that Christ’s offering has provided a complete and permanent standing before God for all who belong to Him. Those being sanctified are still learning obedience, confessing sin, resisting temptation, and growing in holiness; yet their acceptance with God rests upon Christ’s perfection rather than their own. This truth guards us from both despair and carelessness. We need not despair when conscious of weakness, because Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient. We must not become careless about sin, because the Saviour who justified us is also sanctifying us for His glory.

R. A. Torrey urged believers to anticipate their battles and seek victory on their knees before temptation arrives. Such prayer is not an attempt to complete what Christ left unfinished. Rather, it is the humble dependence of those who know that strength, forgiveness, and victory are found in Him alone. We prepare for temptation by remembering the gospel, bringing our weaknesses honestly before God, and asking the Holy Spirit to make Christ’s finished work effective in our daily conduct. When accusation comes, we answer with the sufficiency of Christ. When temptation comes, we flee to His throne for help. When fear comes, we remember that our reigning Saviour has already offered the sacrifice that perfected His people for ever.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I praise Thee for offering Thyself as the one perfect sacrifice for sins and for completing the work that I could never accomplish. Forgive me for trusting my performance, fearing condemnation, or treating sin lightly. Teach me to rest wholly in Thy finished work while yielding myself to Thy sanctifying grace. Prepare my heart before temptation comes, and lead me to seek strength upon my knees rather than relying upon myself. When the accuser speaks, remind me that Thy blood is sufficient. When weakness appears, help me flee to Thee in faith. Make my conduct holy, my conscience tender, and my confidence firmly fixed upon Thee. Amen.
