A Workman Approved unto God

God calls us to handle His Word carefully, humbly, and faithfully—not to win praise from men, but to be approved unto Him. The diligent believer studies Scripture so that truth may govern the heart, shape the life, and be shared without shame.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Paul presents the handling of Scripture as serious work before God. A faithful student of the Bible is like a skilled workman who labours carefully, uses his tools properly, and desires his finished work to withstand inspection. The first concern is not the approval of an audience, a teacher, or a congregation, but the approval of God. This guards us against reading the Bible merely to confirm our opinions, impress others, or collect information. We come to Scripture as servants under its authority, asking the Lord to correct our thinking, expose our sin, deepen our faith, and direct our obedience.

To rightly divide the word of truth means that we must handle it accurately and honestly. We should pay attention to the setting of a passage, the people addressed, the purpose of the writer, and the teaching of Scripture as a whole. A verse must not be detached from its context and made to say whatever we desire. Some portions give commands, others record history, others proclaim promises, warnings, prophecy, wisdom, or praise. Yet all Scripture speaks with divine authority and finds its glorious centre in God’s saving purpose through Jesus Christ. Careful study does not make the Bible cold or merely academic. Rather, it protects us from error and helps us behold the truth of God with greater clarity, reverence, and joy.

Faithful study must also reach beyond the mind into the life. Knowledge without obedience can produce pride, but truth received with humility produces godliness. James warns, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” When Scripture reveals a sin, we must repent. When it gives a command, we must obey. When it declares a promise, we must trust the God who made it. When it reveals Christ, we must worship Him and follow Him. The approved workman is not necessarily the person who knows the most difficult terms, but the one who faithfully receives, lives, and communicates what God has said. Our homes, conversations, decisions, and ministries should bear evidence that the Word has first worked within us.

This diligence must always rest upon the gospel rather than human merit. We do not study Scripture to earn acceptance with God, for our refuge is Jesus Christ and His atoning cross. As A. C. Dixon observed, there is safety and shelter beneath the Cross from the pursuing power of sin. Christ bore the judgment our sins deserved, and everyone who trusts in Him is received by grace. From that secure refuge, we labour gratefully as servants who belong to Him. Therefore, let us open the Bible with prayer, examine it patiently, compare Scripture with Scripture, and submit to its truth. One day our work will be examined by the Lord. May we be found unashamed—not because we were clever or admired, but because we faithfully handled His Word and pointed others to Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank Thee for giving us Thy sure and perfect Word. Forgive me for the times I have read it carelessly, used it to support my own opinions, or heard its truth without obeying it. Give me humility, patience, and diligence as I study the Scriptures. Help me to understand each passage faithfully, to receive correction willingly, and to apply Thy truth honestly to my life. Keep me from pride and error, and make me a workman who seeks Thy approval above the praise of men. Thank Thee for the refuge provided through the cross of Jesus Christ. May all my study lead me to trust Him more, obey Him gladly, and make Him known faithfully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
