Our Faithful God Hears

David did not approach God boasting of his own goodness, but pleading the Lord’s faithfulness and righteousness. We may pray with the same humility and confidence, trusting not in our merit, but in the mercy of God revealed through Jesus Christ.

Psalm 143 opens with an urgent yet reverent appeal: “Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications.” David is distressed, but he does not allow his distress to drive him away from God. Instead, it drives him into the presence of God. He asks the Lord to hear him “in thy faithfulness” and answer him “in thy righteousness.” His confidence does not rest upon the strength of his feelings, the quality of his prayer, or the worthiness of his conduct. It rests upon the unchanging character of the One to whom he prays. God is faithful to His word, righteous in all His ways, and merciful toward those who seek Him. When our hearts are overwhelmed, we may come honestly before Him, knowing that His character remains steadfast even when our thoughts and circumstances are unsettled.

David’s next words reveal the humility that must accompany believing prayer: “And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.” He does not demand an answer as though God owed him something. He knows that if the perfectly holy God were to judge him according to his own righteousness, he could not stand. This confession overturns every proud attempt to approach God through personal merit. No amount of religious activity, moral effort, or outward respectability can make a sinner righteous before Him. Prayer is therefore not a negotiation in which we present our goodness and request a reward. It is the cry of a needy servant who appeals to divine mercy. True prayer bows before God’s holiness while trusting that He graciously receives those who come to Him in repentance and faith.

For the Christian, this humble confidence is anchored in Jesus Christ. At the cross, God’s righteousness was not ignored, and His mercy was not withheld. Christ bore the judgment deserved by sinners so that all who believe in Him might be forgiven and accepted before God. We do not come pretending that sin is unimportant; we come confessing that Christ alone is sufficient. This gives prayer both seriousness and assurance. We should never approach God casually, yet neither must we remain at a fearful distance. Through Christ, the believer may draw near as a forgiven child to a faithful Father. When conscience accuses us, we should confess our sins rather than hide them, then rest in the finished work of Christ instead of endlessly examining whether we have earned the right to be heard.

H. A. Ironside wrote, “But our witness alone would not amount to very much. We do not have any power in ourselves. The power comes through the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who repent and believe the gospel.” What is true of Christian witness is also true of Christian dependence: we have no spiritual power in ourselves. We need the Holy Spirit to help us pray, obey, and bear faithful testimony to Christ. Today, let weakness become a reason to seek God rather than an excuse for silence or unbelief. Bring your needs plainly before Him, confess your complete dependence, and ask Him to work according to His faithful character. The righteous God who exposes all human boasting is also the faithful God who hears those who humbly seek Him through Christ.

Prayer

Faithful and righteous Father, I come before Thee with no goodness of my own to plead. If Thou shouldest judge me according to my sins, I could not stand; yet I thank Thee for the mercy given through Jesus Christ. Forgive my pride, unbelief, and self-reliance. Teach me to seek Thee honestly, reverently, and confidently, resting in Thy unchanging character rather than in my feelings or performance. By Thy Holy Spirit, strengthen me to pray, obey, and bear faithful witness to the gospel. Help me to confess sin without hiding and to trust Christ without wavering. Hear my supplication, guide my steps today, and let my life honour Thee. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
