Our Faithful and Righteous God

David did not plead his own goodness but rested his prayer upon the faithfulness and righteousness of God. We may come honestly and humbly before the Lord, trusting His unchanging character rather than our uncertain worthiness.

“Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.” David approaches God with urgency, yet also with reverence. He asks the Lord not merely to notice his words, but to give ear to his earnest pleas. His confidence does not arise from the strength of his emotions, the eloquence of his prayer, or the merit of his conduct. He appeals to the character of God: “in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.” Prayer finds firm ground when it rests upon who God is. Our feelings may change, our understanding may be limited, and our circumstances may appear confused, but the Lord remains faithful and righteous. He never acts contrary to His holy nature, forgets His promises, or abandons those who seek Him.

David’s next words reveal the humility that must accompany such confidence: “And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.” He knows that he is God’s servant, but he does not present his service as a claim to personal righteousness. Standing before the searching holiness of God, no living person can establish his own innocence. This confession guards prayer from pride. We do not come as people entitled to divine favour because we have behaved better than others, served faithfully, or endured hardship. We come as needy sinners who depend entirely upon mercy. True prayer is bold about God’s goodness and honest about human guilt. It neither minimizes sin nor allows the awareness of sin to drive us away from the Lord.

For the Christian, this humble appeal directs our hearts to Jesus Christ. We cannot justify ourselves before God, but Christ has accomplished what we could never accomplish. The righteous Saviour bore the judgment deserved by sinners, and all who trust in Him are accepted through His finished work. Therefore, we may seek God without pretending that we have earned a hearing. Confession does not close the door of prayer; through Christ, it brings us into the light of grace. When conscience accuses us, we should not defend ourselves with excuses or withdraw into silence. We should confess our sins, trust the sufficiency of Christ, and call upon the faithful God. Our assurance rests not in a flawless prayer life, but in a perfect Saviour and an unchanging Lord.

David Brainerd wrote, “My soul ‘longed for God, for the living God.’ O how delightful it is, to pray under such sweet influences!” Such longing reminds us that prayer is more than presenting a list of needs. It is the soul turning toward the living God and desiring fellowship with Him. Yet we should pray even when those sweet influences seem absent. God’s faithfulness does not depend upon the warmth of our feelings. Today we may bring Him our fears, failures, responsibilities, and unanswered questions. We may ask Him to hear, guide, correct, and sustain us. Let every request be joined with humble confession and settled trust: the God who hears prayer is faithful in all His ways, righteous in every answer, and gracious to those who approach Him through Christ.

Prayer

O LORD, hear my prayer and give ear to my supplications. I confess that I have no righteousness of my own by which I may claim Thy favour. Forgive my sins, cleanse my heart, and keep me from trusting in my works, feelings, or reputation. Thank Thee for Jesus Christ, whose finished work is my only hope and whose righteousness is sufficient for me. Teach me to seek Thee with humility, honesty, and confidence in Thy unchanging character. When answers seem delayed and my heart grows weary, help me to remember that Thou art faithful and righteous. Draw my soul nearer to Thee, order my steps in obedience, and make my life pleasing in Thy sight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
