Walk Worthy of the Seal

The Holy Spirit who seals believers unto the day of redemption also calls us to holy living today. Because we belong to Christ, we must put away every attitude, word, and action that grieves Him, choosing instead the obedience that pleases God.

Paul gives believers both a solemn command and a precious assurance: “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence or a religious feeling; He is the divine Person who indwells every true believer. That He can be grieved shows that our conduct matters deeply to God. Yet the same verse declares that believers are sealed unto the day of redemption. The seal speaks of God’s ownership, preserving grace, and promised completion of the salvation He has begun. This assurance should never make us careless. Rather, because we belong to God and await the redemption of the body, we should desire to live in a manner worthy of our holy calling.

The surrounding verses make the command practical. Paul speaks against lying, sinful anger, stealing, corrupt communication, bitterness, wrath, clamour, evil speaking, and malice. These are not small matters to be excused as personality traits or momentary weaknesses. They oppose the holy character that the Spirit is forming within God’s people. We grieve Him when we cherish resentment, speak words that tear down, conceal dishonesty, or refuse to forgive. Holiness is therefore not confined to public worship or outward religious appearance. It reaches into conversations, private thoughts, workplace decisions, family relationships, and our treatment of fellow believers. The Spirit desires truth in our speech, grace in our words, honest labour in our hands, and kindness in our relationships.

A. W. Tozer observed, “The devil is a better theologian than any of us and is a devil still.” Biblical knowledge alone is not the same as holiness. The devil knows truths about God, yet he remains in rebellion against God. In the same way, a Christian may understand doctrine, discuss Scripture, and recognize correct teaching while resisting the Spirit’s conviction in daily life. Sound theology is essential, but truth must lead to worship, repentance, faith, and obedience. When the Spirit exposes sin through the Word, we must not defend ourselves, blame others, or delay repentance. We should confess the sin plainly, turn from it, and seek the cleansing and restoring fellowship that God graciously provides through Christ.

Living without grieving the Holy Spirit does not mean attaining sinless perfection in this life. It means walking humbly and responsively before God. When we stumble, we return quickly in repentance rather than making peace with sin. When tempted, we rely upon the Spirit instead of trusting our own strength. When wronged, we remember how freely God has forgiven us for Christ’s sake. The Spirit who seals us is also at work sanctifying us, producing a life increasingly shaped by the character of Christ. Let the certainty of the coming day of redemption strengthen present obedience. We are not trying to earn God’s ownership; we pursue holiness because we are His. May our words, choices, and relationships show that we treasure the presence of the Holy Spirit and long to please the One who has redeemed us.

Prayer

Holy Father, thank Thee for giving Thy Holy Spirit to dwell within me and for sealing me unto the day of redemption. Forgive me for the thoughts, words, attitudes, and actions by which I have grieved Him. Search my heart and reveal every bitterness, dishonest habit, corrupt word, and stubborn resistance that I have excused. Grant me grace to repent without delay and to walk in humble obedience to Thy Word. Govern my speech, purify my motives, and teach me to forgive others as Thou hast forgiven me for Christ’s sake. May my life reflect the holiness of my Saviour and bring honour to Thy name. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
