Faith That Lives

Knowing the truth about God is not the same as trusting and obeying Him. Living faith receives Christ, rests upon His finished work, and bears fruit in a life surrendered to His will.

“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” James 2:19, KJV. James confronts us with a sobering distinction: it is possible to hold correct beliefs about God without possessing a living faith in God. The devils are not atheists. They know that God exists, recognize His authority, and tremble before His coming judgment. Yet their knowledge does not lead them to love, worship, or obey Him. Mere agreement with biblical facts, however accurate, is not the same as saving trust. A person may know Christian doctrine, attend church, discuss Scripture, and still keep his heart from the Lord. True faith involves more than the mind acknowledging that God is real; it is the soul turning to Him in repentance and resting wholly upon Jesus Christ.

Living faith receives Christ not merely as a subject to be studied, but as Lord and Saviour. It does not claim merit before God or attempt to earn salvation through good works. Scripture declares, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8, KJV). We are saved by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ. Yet the faith that truly receives grace does not remain barren. As James teaches, faith without works is dead. Good works are not the root of salvation, but they are its fruit. Where Christ has given new life, there will be a growing desire to obey His Word, forsake sin, love others, forgive injuries, speak truth, and serve faithfully.

This passage therefore calls for honest self-examination rather than comparison with others. Is our faith only a collection of familiar truths, or does it govern our choices? Do we confess Christ with our lips while resisting Him in our habits, relationships, priorities, or private thoughts? A living faith is not a sinless faith, but it is a responsive faith. When God’s Word exposes sin, living faith repents. When His commands are difficult, living faith obeys. When circumstances are uncertain, living faith continues to trust His wisdom and goodness. When we fail, living faith does not hide from God in despair; it returns to Christ, confesses sin, receives cleansing, and rises to walk with Him again.

Andrew A. Bonar wrote, “God’s part is to put forth power; our part is to put forth faith.” We cannot produce spiritual life by human determination, but we are called to trust the God who works in His people. Faith looks away from self-sufficiency and depends upon divine grace. It asks the Lord for strength, then steps forward in obedience because His promises are sure. Perhaps today God is calling you to forgive someone, confess a hidden sin, speak truth graciously, help a person in need, or obey a command you have delayed. Do not be content merely to agree that His way is right. Entrust yourself to Him and act upon His Word. The faith that saves is never an empty profession; by God’s power, it becomes a faithful, obedient, and fruitful life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, search my heart and deliver me from a faith that exists only in words or knowledge. Thank You for salvation by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Teach me to rest in Him fully and to obey You sincerely. Where I have resisted Your Word, grant me repentance; where I am weak, put forth Your power; and where I am afraid, strengthen me to trust Your promises. Let my conduct show that Christ truly rules my heart. Produce in me the fruit of love, holiness, mercy, courage, and faithful service. Keep me from relying upon my works, yet make me ready for every good work that honours You. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
