Sealed unto Redemption

The Holy Spirit is not merely a power to be used, but the divine Person who indwells and seals every believer in Christ. Because we belong to God, we must put away the sins that grieve Him and walk today in truth, purity, kindness, and obedient love.

“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” These words reveal both a precious assurance and a solemn responsibility. Every true believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit, marked as belonging to God and kept unto the day when redemption will be fully realized. Our security in Christ must never make us careless about sin. Rather, the grace that assures us of God’s faithfulness should awaken within us a deeper desire to please Him. The One who seals us is also the One whom our sinful attitudes, words, and actions can grieve.

The surrounding instruction in Ephesians shows that grieving the Spirit is not limited to openly scandalous sin. Falsehood, corrupt speech, bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, evil speaking, and malice are all contrary to the new life believers have received. These sins often appear in ordinary relationships—at home, in church, at work, or in private conversations. A harsh word, a cherished resentment, a dishonest explanation, or speech that tears another person down may seem small to us, but holiness is never a small matter to the Holy Spirit. He works within us to form the character of Christ, and we resist that work whenever we knowingly make room for sin.

A. W. Tozer observed, “The devil is a better theologian than any of us and is a devil still.” Correct knowledge alone cannot produce holiness. The devil knows truths about God, yet remains in rebellion against Him. In the same way, we may understand doctrine, quote Scripture, attend worship, and speak confidently about the faith while refusing to obey what God has plainly shown us. Sound theology is essential, but truth must reach the conscience, govern the tongue, shape our relationships, and lead us to repentance. The evidence that truth has been received is not merely that we can explain it, but that we humbly submit to it.

Living in holiness does not mean pretending that we never fail. It means responding rightly when the Spirit exposes sin. Instead of defending ourselves, blaming others, or delaying repentance, we confess our wrong and turn from it. We seek forgiveness where we have wounded someone, replace corrupt speech with words that minister grace, and put away bitterness by choosing kindness and forgiveness. Such obedience does not earn our redemption; it reflects the new life already given to us in Christ. Today, let the assurance that you are sealed unto the day of redemption move you toward reverence rather than presumption. You belong to God. Therefore, do not make peace with anything that grieves His Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Holy Father, thank Thee for giving Thy Holy Spirit to indwell and seal those who belong to Christ. Forgive me for the thoughts, words, attitudes, and actions by which I have grieved Him. Search my heart and expose every bitterness, dishonest motive, corrupt word, and hidden compromise. Keep me from being satisfied with knowledge that does not lead to obedience. Grant me humility to confess sin quickly, courage to make wrongs right, and grace to forgive as I have been forgiven. Let my speech minister grace, my conduct reflect the character of Christ, and my daily choices honour Thee. Teach me to walk in holiness with grateful assurance, looking unto the day of redemption. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
