Take the Way of Escape

Temptation may be common to man, but God’s faithfulness is greater than every temptation we face. When He provides a way of escape, faith does not linger near sin—it trusts Him enough to take it.

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” These words do not minimize the seriousness of temptation. They remind us that temptation is not an unusual trial known only to us, nor is it proof that God has abandoned us. Others have faced the same kinds of inward desires, outward pressures, fears, resentments, and enticements. Our particular circumstances may differ, but the conflict itself is common to fallen humanity. We should therefore resist both pride, which says we are above temptation, and despair, which says our struggle is hopeless. God calls us to sober dependence upon Him.

The great assurance in this verse is not the strength of our will but the faithfulness of our God. Our feelings may shift, our resolve may weaken, and our judgment may become clouded, but God remains faithful. He knows the true measure of the trial and rules over what He permits. His promise does not mean that obedience will always feel easy, nor that we may carelessly place ourselves near sin and expect to remain unharmed. It means that no temptation can force a believer to disobey. Sin may invite, persuade, intimidate, or deceive, but God faithfully supplies what is needed to endure without yielding. We are never justified in saying that disobedience was our only possible choice.

God also promises to provide “a way to escape.” That escape is often plain and practical: ending a conversation, leaving a place, closing a screen, refusing a second look, confessing a hidden struggle, remembering God’s truth, or seeking help from a faithful Christian. Yet we sometimes ask God for deliverance while continuing to entertain the very thing from which He is calling us away. The way of escape must be taken. R. A. Torrey wrote, “If we allow those words, ‘Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God,’ to sink into our hearts and become the motto of our lives, they will keep us from many a sin.” A tender concern for the Holy Spirit’s holiness moves us beyond asking merely, “Can I get away with this?” Instead, we ask, “Will this please the Lord who has redeemed me?”

Victory over temptation is therefore an act of trusting obedience. We look for God’s provision early, before desire gains strength and excuses begin to sound reasonable. We do not negotiate with sin or test how close we can stand to it. We call upon the Lord, submit our thoughts to His truth, and take the door He has opened. If we have already yielded, we must not hide in shame or surrender to further sin. We should confess honestly, receive God’s mercy, and learn where we ignored His warning or refused His escape. Today, let the faithfulness of God give you courage. Temptation is real, but it is not sovereign. God is faithful, His help is sufficient, and obedience remains possible as you depend upon Him.

Prayer

Faithful Father, I praise Thee that Thou dost not leave me alone in the hour of temptation. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own strength, entertained sinful desires, or ignored the way of escape Thou didst provide. Give me a watchful heart, a tender conscience, and a holy desire not to grieve Thy Spirit. Help me to recognize temptation early, answer deception with Thy truth, and obey without delay. When I feel weak, remind me that Thy faithfulness does not change. Strengthen me to flee from sin, seek help when needed, and choose what is pleasing in Thy sight. May my conduct today honour the Lord Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.
