Power Belongeth unto God

God alone is the source of all true power, and nothing is beyond His sovereign authority. When we remember who He is, we can bring every burden to Him in prayer and respond with quiet, obedient faith.

“God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.” Psalm 62:11, KJV. David received this truth with deep attention: God had spoken, and he had truly heard. Power does not ultimately belong to rulers, armies, wealth, human wisdom, or favourable circumstances. It belongs to God. Every earthly authority is limited, every human resource can fail, and every strong person eventually discovers weakness. The Lord alone possesses power without limit, dependence, or change. He is never overwhelmed by the size of our trouble, never surprised by opposition, and never exhausted by the needs of His people. Faith begins not by measuring our own ability, but by remembering the greatness of the God who has spoken.

This truth brings both comfort and correction. It comforts us because the burdens beyond our strength are not beyond His. We may face circumstances we cannot control, decisions we do not know how to make, or needs we cannot supply. Yet God has not surrendered His throne. We can rest in His sovereign care even when we cannot see what He is doing. But this truth also corrects us, because we often live as though everything depends upon us. We plan anxiously, struggle in our own wisdom, and turn to prayer only after our efforts have failed. Corrie ten Boom asked, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?” That question exposes whether we truly depend upon God or merely seek His help when our own power runs out.

Trusting God’s power does not mean becoming passive or careless. Biblical faith listens to what God has said and then obeys Him. David did not merely acknowledge a doctrine about divine power; he received God’s word until it shaped his confidence. In the same way, we are called to act faithfully while depending upon the Lord for strength, wisdom, and results. We pray before we decide, seek His will before pursuing our preference, and obey even when the outcome remains uncertain. Prayer is not an attempt to persuade a reluctant God to support our plans. It is the humble response of those who know that power belongs to Him and who desire their lives to be governed by His wisdom.

Whatever stands before us today, we need not face it as though we were alone. Our weakness is real, but it does not determine the limits of what God can do. We may ask Him to intervene, strengthen, restrain, open, close, provide, or sustain according to His perfect will. Sometimes He displays His power by changing the situation; at other times He displays it by giving us grace to endure faithfully. In either case, our confidence rests in Him rather than in a particular outcome. Let us hear again what God has spoken: power belongs unto Him. Then let us answer that truth with prayer, patient trust, and prompt obedience. The safest place for every burden is in the hands of the almighty and faithful God.

Prayer

Almighty God, I confess that all power belongs unto Thee. Forgive me for relying upon my own strength, wisdom, and plans while treating prayer as a last resort. Teach me to seek Thee first and to trust Thy sovereign care when circumstances are beyond my control. Give me grace to listen carefully to Thy word, courage to obey what Thou hast commanded, and patience to leave the results in Thy hands. Where I am anxious, settle my heart; where I am weak, strengthen me; and where I am self-reliant, humble me. May my choices today show that my confidence is not in myself, but in Thee alone. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
