Direct Your Prayer and Look Up

David began the morning by deliberately directing his prayer to the Lord and then looking up in expectant trust. Before the demands and distractions of the day take hold, bring your heart before your King and your God, confident that He hears the voice of His people.

“Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” David did not regard prayer as a vague religious exercise. He knew the One to whom he prayed. The Lord was “my King, and my God”—the sovereign Ruler worthy of obedience and the covenant God in whom David personally trusted. His cry arose from need, but it was directed toward the One who possessed all authority and power. When we begin the day in prayer, we are not speaking into emptiness. Through Christ, we come before the living God, who knows our burdens, rules over our circumstances, and hears the cries of His children.

David said twice that he would pray “in the morning.” This repetition reveals deliberate spiritual priority. Before the day became crowded with duties, decisions, opposition, and unexpected trials, he sought the Lord. Morning prayer is not a means of earning God’s favour, nor is it a ritual that guarantees an easy day. It is an act of dependence. We confess that our wisdom is insufficient, our strength is limited, and our hearts are prone to wander. By praying first, we place our plans beneath God’s will and ask Him to govern our thoughts, words, and actions. Even when the morning is busy, a few undistracted moments before the Lord can set the direction of the heart for everything that follows.

The words “I will direct my prayer unto thee” carry the thought of arranging something carefully and setting it in order. David did not merely allow anxious thoughts to circle within him; he turned them into definite petitions before God. We may likewise name our concerns honestly: a temptation requiring resistance, a decision requiring wisdom, a relationship requiring grace, a duty requiring faithfulness, or a sorrow requiring comfort. After directing his prayer, David said, “and will look up.” He prayed with expectation, watching for God’s answer and trusting His wisdom. Expectant prayer does not dictate how God must respond. It rests in the assurance that He has heard and remains attentive to His providential leading throughout the day.

Such trust also strengthens us to confess Christ openly. D. L. Moody said, “If the world wants to call us fools, let them do it. It is only a little while; the crowning day is coming. Thank God for the privilege we have of confessing Christ.” The believer who has looked up to God in the morning need not spend the day looking anxiously for the world’s approval. Our King has heard us, our God goes before us, and our final hope is with Christ. Therefore, we may serve faithfully, speak truth graciously, and bear reproach without shame. Begin today at the throne of grace. Direct your prayer to God, entrust every concern to His care, and then rise to obey Him with a heart that continues to look up.

Prayer

O Lord, my King and my God, I come before Thee at the beginning of this day. Hear the voice of my prayer and teach me to depend upon Thee rather than upon my own wisdom or strength. I place before Thee my duties, decisions, relationships, temptations, and concerns. Order my steps according to Thy will, guard my thoughts, and make my words gracious and true. Give me faith to look up after I have prayed, trusting that Thou hast heard me and that Thy answer is wise. Keep me from seeking the praise of men, and grant me courage to confess Christ faithfully. May all that I do today honour Thee. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
