Seek His Face Evermore

True joy is found not merely in what God gives, but in God Himself. As we seek His strength and presence in the little duties of today, faithful obedience becomes an expression of rejoicing in His holy name.

“Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.” Psalm 105:3-4 calls God’s people to both rejoicing and seeking. These are not separate commands. The heart rejoices because it is seeking the Lord, and it seeks Him because His holy name is worthy of glory. Our deepest joy is not grounded in favourable circumstances, answered plans, or freedom from trouble. It is grounded in the unchanging character of God. His name reveals who He is: holy, faithful, merciful, powerful, and true. When our attention is fixed upon Him, we find a reason for praise that cannot be removed by the uncertainties of the day.

To seek the Lord is more than asking Him to supply a need. We are told to seek “his strength” and “his face.” Seeking His strength is an admission that our own strength is insufficient. We cannot resist temptation, bear burdens patiently, serve others faithfully, or persevere in righteousness merely by determination. The Lord must sustain us. Seeking His face goes deeper still: it is the desire for God Himself, for fellowship with Him and the light of His favour. Prayer and Scripture must therefore be more than hurried religious duties. They are appointed means through which we turn our hearts toward the living God, submit to His truth, confess our dependence, and learn to walk consciously before Him.

The word “evermore” reminds us that seeking God is not reserved for emergencies, church meetings, or seasons of unusual spiritual hunger. It is the continuing posture of a faithful life. We seek Him when decisions are difficult and when duties appear ordinary. We seek Him in public worship and in private obedience, in seasons of rejoicing and in times of grief. This continual seeking often takes shape in little acts of faithfulness: speaking truth, keeping a promise, resisting a private temptation, praying for another person, completing honest work, or showing patience at home. As James Hudson Taylor observed, “A little thing is a little thing, but faithfulness in little things is a great thing.” Small obedience matters because it is offered to a great and holy God.

Perhaps today you feel spiritually weak, distracted, or burdened. The command is not to pretend that you are strong; it is to seek the Lord and His strength. Come to Him honestly. Let His Word correct your thoughts, let prayer bring your anxieties before Him, and let obedience direct your next step. The heart that seeks the Lord has reason to rejoice even before circumstances change, because God is near to those who call upon Him in truth. We may not know everything this day will bring, but we know whose face we are to seek. Let us glory in His holy name, rely upon His sufficient strength, and pursue His presence with steady faithfulness—not only for a moment, but evermore.

Prayer

Holy and faithful Lord, I glory in Thy holy name and thank Thee that true joy is found in knowing Thee. Forgive me for depending upon my own strength and for seeking Thy gifts more earnestly than Thy face. Turn my heart toward Thee today. Give me strength to resist temptation, patience to bear every burden, and grace to obey Thee in both great and little duties. Teach me to seek Thee continually through Thy Word and prayer, not only in trouble but throughout the ordinary moments of life. May my conduct honour Thee, my thoughts rest upon Thy truth, and my heart rejoice in Thy presence. Keep me faithful and near to Thee. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
