Christ Liveth in Me

The Christian life is not an attempt to improve the old self, but a life surrendered to Christ, who now lives in us. Because the Son of God loved us and gave Himself for us, we may trust Him today to rule our hearts, direct our steps, and supply grace for faithful obedience.

Paul’s words describe both the foundation and the daily reality of the Christian life: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” Through faith in Christ, the believer is united with the One who died and rose again. His death has answered for our guilt, and His risen life has become the source of our new life. To be crucified with Christ does not mean that our personality, responsibilities, or earthly existence disappear. It means that the old claim of sin has been broken and that the self is no longer meant to occupy the throne. We belong to Jesus Christ, who purchased us by giving Himself for us.

Yet the old desires of the flesh still seek attention. Pride wants recognition, fear demands control, resentment keeps a record of injuries, and self-reliance tries to live without prayerful dependence upon God. Therefore, living as one crucified with Christ involves daily surrender. We must refuse to treat our preferences as supreme and bring our thoughts, motives, words, and choices under the lordship of Christ. This is not a gloomy rejection of life; it is freedom from the exhausting rule of self. When Christ governs the heart, we are freed to love without demanding repayment, serve without seeking applause, forgive because we have been forgiven, and obey even when obedience is costly.

Paul also declares, “the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God.” Faith is not merely the doorway through which we first enter the Christian life; it is how we continue each day. We depend upon Christ rather than trusting our own wisdom, strength, or worthiness. We take Him at His word when feelings are unsettled, circumstances are uncertain, and temptation is strong. Faith looks away from self to the sufficiency of the Saviour. It says, “I cannot produce holy life from my own resources, but Christ liveth in me.” His indwelling presence does not make careful obedience unnecessary; rather, it gives us both the reason and the strength to obey.

At the heart of this life of faith is a deeply personal assurance: the Son of God “loved me, and gave himself for me.” Christian surrender is not offered to a distant master but to the loving Saviour who bore our sin. As Martyn Lloyd-Jones observed, we are Christians solely because of the grace of God, not because of anything we have thought, said, or done. Grace removes every ground for boasting and every excuse for despair. We do not earn Christ’s love by performing well, nor do we lose hope when our weakness is exposed. We return in repentance and faith to the One who gave Himself for us. Today, let His love humble your pride, quiet your fears, and move you toward willing obedience. You are not called to live for yourself, by yourself, or in your own strength. Christ liveth in you; therefore live by faith in Him.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I praise Thee for loving me and giving Thyself for me. Forgive me for the pride, fear, self-reliance, and hidden desires that resist Thy rightful rule. Teach me to reckon my old life crucified with Thee and to yield every part of this day to Thy lordship. Live through me in my thoughts, words, decisions, and relationships. When I feel weak, keep my eyes fixed upon Thy sufficiency; when I am tempted, strengthen me to obey; and when I fail, lead me quickly to repentance and renewed faith. Let Thy grace remove all boasting and despair, and make my life a humble witness to Thy saving love. Amen.

Walk in faith today

Before beginning your main responsibilities today, prayerfully identify one desire, fear, habit, or decision that you have been trying to control, surrender it specifically to Christ, and choose one concrete act of obedience that reflects His rule over you.
