Follow Me

Jesus does not merely call us to admire Him, but to follow Him in daily faith and obedience. As we walk closely with Christ, He shapes our lives and uses our witness to draw others to Himself.

Daily Devotion

“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The call of Jesus in Matthew 4:19, KJV, is both personal and purposeful. Before the disciples could become fishers of men, they had to follow Christ. Their usefulness did not begin with special ability, persuasive speech, or religious knowledge. It began with leaving their former direction and placing themselves under the authority of the Lord Jesus. The same order remains true for us. Christian witness must flow from Christian discipleship. We cannot faithfully point others toward Christ while carelessly walking away from Him ourselves.

The words “I will make you” remind us that Christ Himself prepares His servants. The fishermen whom Jesus called were not yet ready for all that lay before them. They would need correction, patience, courage, humility, and a deeper understanding of His truth. Yet Jesus did not say that they must first make themselves worthy. He called them to follow, and He promised to do the forming. As we remain near Him through Scripture, prayer, worship, and obedience, He changes our character. He teaches us to see people not as interruptions, problems, or projects, but as souls who need the grace and truth of God.

To be a fisher of men is not to pressure people or manipulate their emotions. It is to bear faithful witness to Jesus Christ, speaking the truth in love and trusting God with the result. Some opportunities will come through direct conversation; others will arise through patient kindness, a clear testimony, an invitation to church, or a compassionate response during suffering. Our part is to be ready, sincere, and unashamed. We should know the gospel we profess, live consistently with it, and speak when the Lord opens a door. The saving power belongs to God, but He graciously chooses to work through the testimony of ordinary believers.

Warren W. Wiersbe observed, “The most important part of our lives is the part that only God sees, and the most important words we speak are those that God hears in the place of prayer.” This is especially important in our witness. Public words carry spiritual weight when they are supported by a private life with God. Before speaking to people about Christ, we should speak to Christ about people. Let us pray for specific souls, ask for divine opportunities, and examine whether our conduct supports our message. The call remains simple but searching: follow Jesus closely, allow Him to shape us, and willingly join His work of reaching the lost.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You and for promising to shape me for Your service. Forgive me for the times I have followed my own desires, neglected prayer, or remained silent when You gave me an opportunity to speak. Draw me nearer to You through Your Word, and make my private life sincere before Your sight. Give me compassion for those who do not know You, wisdom to speak with grace and truth, and courage that is free from pride or fear. Please prepare the hearts of those around me and use my words, conduct, and kindness to point them to You. Make me a faithful fisher of men for Your glory. Amen.
