Under His Watchful Care

The Lord sees every faithful step and hears every prayer offered through faith in Christ. Because His watchful care never fails, we may walk uprightly, pray confidently, and use whatever strength He gives us for what is right.

Peter writes to believers who knew hardship, misunderstanding, and opposition. His assurance is clear: “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers.” God is not distant from His people or unaware of what they endure. His eyes are over them with perfect knowledge, fatherly concern, and watchful care. The righteous are not those who have earned His attention through sinless performance, but those who belong to Christ and seek to walk in obedience to Him. Their circumstances may appear unnoticed by others, yet nothing in their lives escapes the Lord. He sees the private burden, the unrecognized service, the resisted temptation, and the costly act of faithfulness.

The Lord not only sees His people; His ears are open unto their prayers. Prayer is therefore more than a religious exercise or a means of calming ourselves. It is the privilege of speaking to the living God, who receives the cries of His children. Sometimes His answer comes quickly, while at other times He calls us to wait. Sometimes He changes the situation, and sometimes He supplies grace to remain faithful within it. A delayed answer must never be mistaken for divine indifference. God hears with complete wisdom and responds according to His holy will. We may approach Him honestly, confessing sin, expressing need, giving thanks, and placing every concern under His sovereign care.

The closing words of the verse also bring a solemn warning: “but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.” God’s watchfulness is comforting to those who seek righteousness, but it is fearful to those who persist in evil. We must not presume upon His kindness while cherishing known sin. If our prayers seem hindered, we should humbly examine our conduct, relationships, motives, and treatment of others. Peter’s surrounding instruction calls believers to turn from evil, do good, and pursue peace. Genuine prayer and obedient living belong together. We do not obey in order to purchase God’s favour, but because His grace has called us out of darkness and into a life that reflects His holiness.

Henry Ward Beecher observed, “Greatness lies not in being strong, but in the right use of strength.” That principle fits the practical direction of this passage. God may give us influence, knowledge, resources, endurance, or the ability to answer harshness with restraint. Such strength is not given for pride, retaliation, or self-promotion, but for doing good. Under God’s watchful eye, even quiet obedience has lasting value. Today we can use our strength to encourage someone, make peace, speak truth graciously, bear another’s burden, or refuse a sinful response. We need not fear being overlooked, for the Lord sees. We need not despair in prayer, for the Lord hears. Let us therefore walk uprightly, depend upon Christ, and use every gift entrusted to us in a manner pleasing to God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank Thee that Thine eyes are over Thy people and Thine ears are open unto their prayers. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Thy care, relied upon my own strength, or allowed known sin to remain unconfessed. Search my heart and lead me in the way of righteousness. Teach me to pray with faith, patience, humility, and submission to Thy will. Help me to use every ability, opportunity, and influence Thou hast given me for good rather than for pride or selfish gain. Make me watchful in conduct, gracious in speech, and ready to pursue peace. May my life honour the Lord Jesus Christ today. In His precious name, Amen.
