God's love for His people did not begin with our goodness, nor will it end with our weakness. Today, let His lovingkindness draw you away from self-reliance and into the rest found in Him.

Jeremiah 31:3 gives us a precious glimpse into the heart of God: “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” The Lord speaks of a love that reaches back beyond our earliest memory and forward beyond our understanding. His love is not a passing affection, dependent upon changing circumstances or fluctuating emotions. It is everlasting because it rises from His own faithful character. Before we could seek Him, He had already set His love upon His people; before we could understand His grace, He was already working to draw us near.

This verse also teaches us the manner in which God draws us. He does not describe His approach as harsh compulsion, but as lovingkindness. The Lord may correct us, convict us, and expose the sin we would rather conceal, yet even His chastening is not the rejection of a stranger. It is the faithful work of a Father who will not abandon His children to destruction. His kindness leads us to repentance, softens our resistance, and opens our eyes to the emptiness of every refuge apart from Him. When the Spirit brings the gospel to our hearts, we are not being invited into a cold religious duty, but being called home by the God who has loved us with an everlasting love.

Augustine wrote, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” Much of our weariness comes from trying to find in created things what only the Creator can provide. We look for lasting peace in human approval, achievement, possessions, control, or comfort, but these cannot bear the weight of our souls. The restless heart is not healed by obtaining more of the world; it is quieted by returning to God. His everlasting love does not merely pardon our past. It gives us a secure place to stand today, teaching us that our deepest identity and truest hope are found in belonging to Him.

Therefore, receive the Lord's lovingkindness with humility and confidence. If you have wandered, do not interpret His conviction as proof that He has cast you away. Hear instead the gracious call to return. If you are burdened, bring your weakness honestly before Him. If you are serving faithfully, remember that obedience is not a payment by which you earn His love, but a grateful response to love already given. The God who draws His people with lovingkindness is worthy of our trust in every season. Let His everlasting love turn your heart from fear to faith, from striving to surrender, and from restless searching to joyful rest in Him.

Prayer

O merciful and faithful Lord, I thank Thee that Thy love is everlasting and does not depend upon my strength or goodness. Forgive me for seeking rest in things that cannot satisfy, and for resisting Thy gracious work in my heart. Teach me to recognize Thy lovingkindness even when Thou art correcting me, and help me to return quickly whenever I wander. Draw me nearer to Thyself through Thy Word, and settle my restless heart in the sufficiency of Thy grace. Make my life a grateful response to Thy love, and enable me to show patience, kindness, and truth to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
