When Grace Has Passed By
Daily Verse
“Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:” - Proverbs 1:24-28, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
The Cost of Refusing the Call
God calls, but He does not force. When we persistently refuse His invitation, there comes a day when the season of grace gives way to the sober reality of judgment. Today's passage in Proverbs warns us not to presume upon the patience of a holy God.
A Christian Voice
“In Jesus Christ on the Cross there is refuge; there is safety; there is shelter; and all the power of sin upon our track cannot reach us when we have taken shelter under the Cross that atones for our sins.” - A. C. Dixon
Daily Devotion
There is a haunting solemnity in Proverbs 1:24-28 that ought to still every heart before the Lord. Solomon, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, personifies Wisdom as One who calls out publicly, who stretches out her hand in the streets, who pleads with the simple and the scornful to turn from their ways. Yet the response is chilling: they refused, they regarded not, they set at nought all counsel, and they would have none of reproof. This is not the rebellion of the ignorant but the deliberate rejection of those who have heard and turned away.
The consequence that follows is among the most terrifying passages in Scripture — not because God is cruel, but because He is just. 'I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh.' We must be careful here. This is not the laughter of a capricious deity taking pleasure in human suffering. It is the righteous response of a holy God whose patient love has been spurned, whose gracious warnings have been mocked, and whose justice must finally have its day. As A. C. Dixon observed, there is refuge under the Cross that atones for our sins. But to despise that Cross is to stand exposed to the whirlwind of judgment with no shelter left.
The picture is deliberately severe: calamity, desolation, and destruction that comes as a whirlwind — sudden, complete, and overwhelming. And in that day, those who would not answer Wisdom's call will themselves cry out. 'Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me.' There is a point at which the Spirit of God ceases to strive with a man. The conscience that was once pricked becomes seared. The door that was open is shut. Not because God delights in shutting it, but because the soul has hardened itself past repentance.
Yet let us not read this passage only as a warning to those outside the faith. Every believer must examine their own heart. Is there an area where the Lord has been calling, stretching out His hand through His Word, through a sermon, through a brother or sister in Christ — and we have turned away? Have we set at nought His counsel in some corner of our lives? If so, today is still the day of grace. The door remains open. Flee to the Cross, where Christ has borne the whirlwind of judgment in our place. There is safety there. There is shelter there. Do not wait until the storm is upon you.
Prayer
O Lord God, our Refuge and our Strength, we tremble at the severity of Your Word and the holiness of Your judgments. Yet we thank You that today the door of mercy remains open, that Your hand is still stretched out to us. Search our hearts, we pray. Show us every hidden place where we have resisted Your counsel or turned from Your reproof. Grant us the humility to repent while repentance may be found. We take shelter this morning beneath the shadow of the Cross, where Christ endured the storm we deserved. Keep us near to You, and let us never presume upon Your grace nor despise Your patient love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Walk in faith today
Is there an area in your life where you know the Lord has been calling you to change — a habit, a relationship, a hidden sin, or a step of obedience — and you have been refusing? Take five minutes right now to name it before the Lord in silent prayer, and commit today to one concrete action that moves toward obedience, no matter how small.
