The Peace Christ Gives

Sunday, 04 October 2026

Daily Verse

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - John 14:27, KJV

Thoughts for the Day

Peace That Does Not Leave

Christ’s peace does not depend on a quiet life, but on the Saviour who remains faithful amid our troubles. Because He has reconciled us to God and will not forsake His own, we can bring Him our fears and obey Him even before our circumstances change.

A Christian Voice

“As sure as God puts His children in the furnace of affliction, He will be with them in it.” - C. H. Spurgeon

Daily Devotion

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus spoke peace to disciples whose world was about to be shaken: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27, KJV. He knew the betrayal, suffering, and separation that lay ahead. His promise was therefore not a reassurance that nothing painful would happen. It was the gift of His own peace in the very presence of approaching sorrow. The One who spoke these words would go to the cross willingly, accomplish our redemption, and rise again. His peace rests on who He is and what He has done, not on our ability to keep life under control.

The world often offers peace through favourable circumstances: enough money, good health, approval from others, or freedom from conflict. These things may bring temporary relief, but none can reconcile a sinner to God or secure the heart against every loss. Christ gives something deeper. Through His death and resurrection, those who trust in Him are forgiven and brought into a right relationship with God. We no longer need to face our heavenly Father as condemned enemies; we may come to Him as His beloved children. This does not mean that every anxious feeling immediately disappears. It means that beneath our changing emotions stands an unchanging reality: our Saviour has dealt with our sin, and our lives are held in His faithful care. We can return to that truth when our feelings tell a different story.

In the surrounding passage, Jesus promises the Holy Ghost, who would teach His disciples and bring His words to their remembrance. The Lord was not leaving them to manufacture courage from their own resources. His provision included His abiding presence through the Spirit and the truth He had spoken. We likewise need more than the instruction to stop worrying. We need to hear our Lord through Scripture, confess our dependence, and bring our particular burdens before Him. C. H. Spurgeon said, “As sure as God puts His children in the furnace of affliction, He will be with them in it.” The comfort is not that the furnace is imaginary or harmless, but that God does not abandon His children there. His presence sustains us when deliverance has not yet come.

“Let not your heart be troubled” is a gracious call to trust, not permission to shame someone who is struggling. Jesus knew His disciples’ weakness, and He knows ours. When fear rises today, name it honestly before Him rather than hiding it beneath religious words. Then remember His promise and take the next faithful step. Perhaps that means speaking gently in a strained relationship, fulfilling a difficult responsibility, or asking a mature believer to pray with you. Christ’s peace does not make us indifferent to suffering; it frees us to love and obey without making fear our master. We may still grieve, wait, and wrestle, yet we do so with a living Saviour. His gift is better than a trouble-free day: it is peace rooted in reconciliation with God and sustained by His faithful presence.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the peace You give through Your Son, Jesus Christ. I confess that I often look to favourable circumstances for the security only You can provide. Forgive my unbelief, and help me bring my fears honestly before You. Thank You that Christ died and rose again to reconcile sinners to You. By Your Holy Spirit, bring His words to my remembrance when my heart is troubled. Give me grace to fulfil today’s responsibilities, speak gently, and care for others who are burdened. Sustain those passing through affliction, and help our church to show them patient love. Whether relief comes quickly or I must wait, teach me to trust Your faithful presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Walk in faith today

Bring one specific worry to Christ in prayer, read John 14:27 aloud, and then take one act of obedience that this fear has been holding you back from doing.
