Carry Every Care to God

Anxiety urges us to carry tomorrow before its burdens arrive, but God calls us to bring every concern to Him today. Prayer with thanksgiving turns our hearts from fearful self-reliance toward quiet confidence in the wisdom, goodness, and faithfulness of our heavenly Father.

Daily Devotion

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6, KJV. This command does not deny that believers face serious needs, painful uncertainties, or weighty responsibilities. The word “careful” speaks of anxious care—the troubled state in which our thoughts are pulled in many directions and our fears begin to govern us. God does not rebuke us for recognizing a problem or feeling our weakness. Rather, He graciously directs us away from carrying our burdens alone. Instead of allowing anxiety to become our master, we are invited to bring every matter before the Lord who already knows our needs and remains sovereign over every circumstance.

Paul tells us to pray “in every thing.” Nothing is too great for God’s power, and nothing is too small for His fatherly attention. Prayer turns our hearts toward God; supplication honestly names the particular need; thanksgiving remembers His past mercies and acknowledges His present goodness. Thanksgiving does not pretend that sorrow is pleasant or that danger is unreal. It declares that God is still faithful while the answer is not yet visible. It reminds us that the Father who gave His Son for our salvation will never become careless toward His children. Our requests may be specific and earnest, yet they must be placed in hands wiser than our own. Biblical prayer is not an attempt to control God but an act of humble dependence upon Him.

D. L. Moody observed, “A great mistake people make is that they are looking for peace in the world. It is not to be found in the world.” The world cannot give lasting peace because its circumstances continually change. Health may weaken, plans may fail, relationships may become strained, and tomorrow may bring news we did not expect. If our peace depends upon everything around us being settled, our hearts will never truly rest. Christian peace is found not in a trouble-free world but in the unchanging Lord. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you” (John 14:27, KJV). His peace rests upon His finished work, His abiding presence, and His faithful promises.

Prayerful trust does not mean passivity. After praying, we should obey whatever duty God has placed before us, seek reconciliation where needed, ask for wise counsel, and take responsible action. But we must refuse to carry what belongs to God alone: the final outcome, the hidden future, and the hearts of other people. Anxiety repeatedly asks, “What if?” Faith answers by remembering who God is. Therefore, whenever anxious thoughts return, let them become a summons to pray again. Present the same request if necessary, add thanksgiving for known mercies, and entrust the matter afresh to the Lord. He may change the circumstance, give strength to endure it, redirect our plans, or teach us to wait. Whatever His answer, His character remains trustworthy, and no burden placed in His hands is ever placed there in vain.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thou knowest every concern that troubles my heart and every uncertainty that lies before me. Forgive me for trying to carry in my own strength what I should place in Thy hands. Teach me to bring everything to Thee with honest supplication and grateful remembrance of Thy mercies. Guard my thoughts from fear, strengthen me to obey the duty before me, and help me leave the outcome with Thee. Thank Thee for the peace Christ gives, for Thy wisdom that never fails, and for Thy fatherly care that never sleeps. May my confidence rest not in favourable circumstances, but in Thy unchanging character and faithful promises. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
