Known by Our Refuge

Trouble may unsettle our circumstances, but it cannot alter the goodness of God. The Lord is a strong hold for all who trust in Him, and He knows His people with perfect love and care.

Nahum declared the goodness of God during a message of solemn judgment: “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” The surrounding circumstances were grave, yet the character of God remained unchanged. His goodness does not depend upon peaceful days, favourable news, or easy answers. He is good in every season. When trouble comes, believers do not have to persuade God to become compassionate or attentive. We may flee to Him because He already is good, and everything He does is consistent with His holy and faithful nature.

The Lord is also called “a strong hold in the day of trouble.” A strong hold is a place of security when danger threatens—a refuge strong enough to withstand what comes against it. Scripture does not say that those who trust God will never experience a day of trouble. Rather, it assures us that when such a day arrives, the Lord Himself is our defence. Our refuge is not merely a change of circumstances, a human solution, or our own ability to remain calm. God is our strong hold. We may bring Him our fear, grief, uncertainty, and weakness, knowing that no trouble is greater than His power and no burden lies beyond His care.

The final words of the verse give tender assurance: “he knoweth them that trust in him.” God’s knowledge of His people is personal, complete, and loving. He knows every pressure we carry, every question we cannot answer, and every silent prayer we struggle to express. More importantly, He knows those who belong to Him. Trust is not pretending that trouble is small; it is resting in the truth that God is greater. Corrie ten Boom wisely said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” The future may be hidden from us, but the God who holds it has made His goodness and faithfulness known.

Therefore, the day of trouble can become a day of deeper trust. We need not understand every detail before we take refuge in the Lord. We can remember what is already certain: He is good, He is strong, and He knows His own. These truths do not remove every pain immediately, but they give the soul a firm place to stand. Instead of allowing fear to govern our thoughts, we can deliberately turn our attention to God’s character, commit the unknown to His wisdom, and obey what He has already shown us. The safest place is not where trouble cannot reach us, but where trouble cannot separate us from confidence in our faithful God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thou art good, faithful, and mighty, and I thank Thee that Thou dost not change when my circumstances become difficult. Be my strong hold in every trouble I face today. Forgive me for allowing fear to rule my thoughts and for leaning upon my own understanding and strength. Teach me to trust Thee when the future is uncertain and when answers seem far away. Thank Thee for knowing me completely and caring for every burden I carry. Help me to rest in Thy wisdom, obey Thy Word, and encourage others who are passing through trials. Keep my heart steadfast, and let my life bear witness that Thou art worthy of trust. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
