Safe in the Known God

Trouble may make the future uncertain, but it cannot change the goodness of God. As Corrie ten Boom said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

“The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” Nahum 1:7, KJV. This verse does not deny that days of trouble will come. Scripture speaks honestly about sorrow, fear, opposition, loss, and uncertainty. Yet the believer is never asked to face these things without a refuge. Nahum begins with the character of God: “The LORD is good.” His goodness is not weakened by our circumstances, nor does it disappear when we cannot understand His ways. Before we consider the size of our trouble, we are called to remember the unchanging goodness of the Lord.

The Lord is also described as “a strong hold in the day of trouble.” A strong hold is a place of protection and security when danger presses near. God does not merely point His people toward safety; He Himself is their refuge. We may seek relief in careful plans, human strength, financial security, or the approval of others, but none of these can bear the full weight of our trust. They may have a proper place, yet they cannot take the place of God. When trouble comes, faith runs to the Lord through prayer, rests upon His Word, and refuses to measure His faithfulness by the emotions of the moment.

The final words are deeply personal: “he knoweth them that trust in him.” The Lord does not regard His people as an anonymous crowd. He knows each one who trusts in Him—the hidden grief, the unanswered question, the private fear, and the weary effort to remain faithful. His knowledge is not distant observation but loving care. We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but we are known by the One who rules tomorrow. Corrie ten Boom wisely said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Christian confidence does not come from knowing every outcome; it comes from knowing the character of the Lord who holds us.

Trusting God does not mean pretending that trouble is painless or refusing wise action. It means bringing the whole burden to Him and obeying Him while we wait. The day of trouble can become a day in which the sufficiency of our refuge is proved. When anxious thoughts return, we can answer them with what God has revealed: He is good, He is strong, and He knows His people. Let this truth steady your heart today. You are not asked to possess strength for every possible future. You are called to trust the Lord in the present moment, take the next faithful step, and leave what you cannot control in His wise and gracious hands.

Prayer

O Lord, Thou art good and faithful in every season. When trouble surrounds me and the future appears uncertain, keep me from leaning upon my own understanding or seeking security apart from Thee. Teach me to run to Thee as my strong hold, to rest upon Thy Word, and to remember that I am fully known by Thee. Forgive my fearful thoughts and my attempts to control what belongs in Thy hands. Give me wisdom for the duties before me, courage to obey Thee, and patience while I wait for Thy help. Strengthen all who are passing through sorrow, danger, or uncertainty today. Fix our hearts upon Thy unchanging goodness, and help us to trust Thee one day at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
