First Things First

Jesus calls us to place God's kingdom and righteousness before every earthly concern. When God is first, we may entrust our needs and uncertainties to the faithful care of our heavenly Father.

Daily Devotion

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33, KJV. These words of Jesus come in the midst of His teaching about anxiety over food, drink, and clothing. He does not deny that such needs are real, nor does He rebuke responsible work and careful stewardship. Instead, He confronts the tendency of our hearts to let temporary concerns become ruling concerns. Our heavenly Father knows what we need. Because He knows, we do not have to live as though everything depends upon our own foresight, strength, or control.

To seek the kingdom of God first is to desire God's rule over every part of life. It means asking what honours Christ before asking what is easiest, most profitable, or most comfortable. We seek His kingdom when we submit our plans to His will, obey His Word when obedience is costly, serve others without craving recognition, and value eternal fruit above passing success. This seeking is not confined to prayer meetings or Sunday worship. It belongs in our homes, workplaces, friendships, finances, private thoughts, and daily decisions. Christ is not merely to receive a place among our priorities; He is to govern all our priorities.

Jesus also commands us to seek God's righteousness. We cannot earn acceptance with God through our own goodness; our hope rests wholly in Christ. Yet those who belong to Him should sincerely desire a life that reflects His character. We are called to turn from sin, pursue holiness, speak truth, show mercy, forgive others, and walk humbly before God. This pursuit begins with dependence rather than self-confidence. We come to the Lord in prayer, receive His Word with a teachable heart, confess our failures honestly, and trust Him to shape our desires. Seeking righteousness is not an attempt to appear religious; it is the obedient response of a heart that treasures God.

The promise that “all these things shall be added unto you” is not a guarantee of ease, wealth, or freedom from suffering. It is the assurance that the Father remains faithful while His children seek Him. He may provide differently from what we expected, lead us through loss, or strip away something on which we wrongly depended. Even then, His purpose is not defeated. Elisabeth Elliot wrote, “Of one thing I am perfectly sure: God's story never ends with ashes.” What appears ruined or empty is not beyond God's redeeming wisdom. Therefore, we can place Him first today without fear. We may do the next right thing, entrust tomorrow to Him, and rest in the care of the Father who knows our needs and rules with perfect goodness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for allowing earthly needs, personal ambitions, and anxious thoughts to take the place that belongs to You. Teach me to seek Your kingdom first and to desire the righteousness that reflects the character of Christ. Rule over my plans, words, choices, relationships, and use of time. Give me grace to obey when obedience is costly and to trust You when Your provision differs from my expectations. Guard me from selfish ambition and unbelieving fear. Help me remember that You know every need before I ask and that Your wisdom is always good. May my life honour the Lord Jesus today, and may Your will be more precious to me than comfort, success, or approval. In Jesus' name, Amen.
