Light for the Next Step

God does not always reveal the whole road at once, but His Word gives sufficient light for the step before us. As we receive His truth with obedient hearts, we are also equipped to share its comfort and wisdom with others.

Daily Devotion

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105, KJV. The psalmist describes the Word of God not as a distant decoration, but as a lamp carried by a traveller. Its light falls first upon the feet, showing where to stand and what step to take next. It also shines upon the path, revealing the direction in which a faithful life should move. We often desire a complete map of the future, yet the Lord commonly gives enough light for present obedience. His guidance is not meant merely to satisfy our curiosity about tomorrow; it calls us to trust and obey Him today.

The world offers many voices that claim to provide direction. Personal feelings, popular opinion, human wisdom, and changing circumstances may all compete for authority in our decisions. Feelings can be sincere and still mislead us, while what society approves today may be rejected tomorrow. God's Word, however, remains true and trustworthy. Scripture reveals God's character, exposes sin, corrects false thinking, and teaches us what pleases Him. When we face uncertainty, we should not begin by asking only what seems easiest, safest, or most advantageous. We should ask what agrees with the truth God has already spoken. The Holy Spirit never guides a believer contrary to the written Word He inspired.

A lamp is useful only when its light is allowed to direct the traveller. In the same way, merely owning, reading, or discussing the Bible is not the same as walking according to it. God's Word may uncover an attitude that must be confessed, a command that must be obeyed, a habit that must be forsaken, or a person who must be forgiven. At such moments, guidance becomes personal and costly. We may be tempted to search for another answer, but clearer understanding often follows faithful obedience to what is already clear. The believer who submits to Scripture is not promised freedom from every difficulty, but is kept from wandering blindly and is led in a way that honours the Lord.

God's light is also given to be shared. Billy Graham said, “God has given us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with.” We receive instruction, correction, comfort, and hope from Scripture; then we may offer those same treasures to others with humility and love. A truth that strengthens us may encourage a weary friend. A warning that protects us may help someone avoid a harmful choice. We must never use the Bible as a weapon for pride or condemnation, but neither should we hide its light. Let us receive God's Word gratefully, obey it carefully, and share it faithfully, trusting Him to guide both our feet and our path.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank Thee for giving us Thy Word as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Forgive us for the times when we have followed our feelings, trusted human wisdom, or resisted what Thou hast plainly spoken. Give us humble hearts to receive Thy truth, courage to obey it, and patience to trust Thee when we cannot see far ahead. By Thy Holy Spirit, correct our thinking, guard our steps, and lead us in ways that honour Christ. Help us also to share the comfort and wisdom of Scripture with others graciously, without pride or harshness. May our lives bear witness that Thy way is true and good. In Jesus' name, Amen.
