Seek First the Kingdom

Jesus calls us to place God’s kingdom and righteousness before every earthly concern. When our hearts are ordered by faithful trust and obedience, we may leave our needs in the hands of our heavenly Father.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” These words of Jesus address hearts easily burdened by the necessities and uncertainties of life. Food, clothing, work, health, family responsibilities, and tomorrow’s unknowns can occupy our thoughts until anxiety begins to govern us. Christ does not deny that these needs are real. Instead, He directs us to the greater reality of our Father’s wise and faithful care. Our first concern must not be securing complete control over our circumstances, but living under the gracious rule of God. When His kingdom has first place, every other concern is brought into its proper order.

To seek the kingdom of God is to desire that God’s will be done in us and through us. It means submitting our plans, ambitions, relationships, resources, and decisions to the authority of the King. Seeking His righteousness is not an attempt to earn His favour through human goodness. Those who belong to Christ desire to walk in the ways that please Him, depending upon His grace and obeying His Word. This pursuit is active and daily. We seek Him when we choose truth over convenience, purity over compromise, forgiveness over bitterness, generosity over selfishness, and faithful service over personal recognition. God must not merely receive a place among our priorities; He must govern them all.

The promise that “all these things shall be added unto you” is not a guarantee of luxury, ease, or freedom from trials. Jesus is teaching us to trust our heavenly Father for what He knows we need. God’s provision may not always arrive in the form, measure, or timing we would choose, but His care is never careless and His wisdom is never mistaken. Anxiety looks ahead and imagines that we must carry tomorrow without sufficient grace. Faith looks to the Father and remembers that our lives are already known to Him. We can therefore work diligently, plan wisely, and fulfil our responsibilities without making earthly security our master. Our confidence rests not in favourable circumstances, but in the character of God.

Oswald Chambers wrote, “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” Prayer is one vital way we seek God first rather than merely asking Him to approve plans already made. In prayer, our desires are examined, our fears are surrendered, and our wills are brought beneath His will. Before rushing into the demands of this day, let us turn our attention deliberately toward the Lord. Let us ask what would honour His name, advance His purposes, and display His righteousness in the place where He has set us. A life centred on God is not formed by one dramatic decision alone, but by many quiet acts of trust and obedience. Seek Him first today, and entrust everything else to His fatherly care.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for allowing earthly concerns to occupy the place that belongs to You. Teach me to seek Your kingdom first and to desire the righteousness that pleases You. Bring my plans, ambitions, fears, and responsibilities under Your gracious rule. Give me wisdom to work faithfully without being governed by anxiety, and help me trust Your perfect knowledge of every need. Through Your Word and prayer, turn my heart from self-reliance and make me attentive to Your will. Let my choices, words, and conduct honour the Lord Jesus Christ today. Use my life for Your purposes, and grant me grace to leave tomorrow confidently in Your faithful hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
