Light for the Next Step

God does not always reveal the whole road before us, but He faithfully gives light for the step we must take today. As we read, trust, and obey His Word, He guards our feet and directs our path.

Daily Devotion

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105, KJV. The psalmist lived in a world of real danger, uncertainty, temptation, and sorrow, yet he knew where dependable guidance could be found. God's Word was not merely a collection of wise sayings to admire; it was light by which he could walk. A lamp in biblical times illuminated the ground immediately before the traveller. It revealed hazards, showed where to place the next step, and kept him from wandering in darkness. In the same way, Scripture often does not disclose every detail of our future. Instead, God gives sufficient truth for present faithfulness. He calls us to trust what He has spoken and to obey what He has already made clear.

God's Word guides us because it reveals God's character, exposes our hearts, and teaches us what is righteous. Our feelings can change from hour to hour, and human counsel, though sometimes helpful, is never infallible. The customs of society also shift, often calling good evil and evil good. Scripture remains a sure light because its Author does not change. Through its commands, warnings, promises, histories, and doctrines, the Lord corrects our assumptions and renews our minds. When we face a decision, we should therefore ask more than whether an option is convenient, popular, or personally desirable. We should ask whether it agrees with God's revealed will, reflects the character of Christ, and enables us to walk in truth, love, holiness, and wisdom.

A lamp is useful only when its light is received and followed. We may read Scripture regularly and still resist its direction when it confronts a cherished desire, exposes a sinful habit, or requires costly obedience. James warns against hearing the Word without doing it, because true reception produces action. The Lord may use His Word to lead us toward forgiveness, honest speech, patient service, sexual purity, generosity, reconciliation, or courage in witness. At such moments, guidance is not mainly a question of discovering some hidden answer; it is a matter of submitting to the light already given. Obedience does not earn God's favour, but it is the fitting response of those who have received His grace and belong to Jesus Christ.

Billy Graham said, “God has given us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with.” This provides a helpful picture of our relationship to biblical truth. We receive God's Word with humility, gratitude, and faith; then we give its comfort, wisdom, and hope to others. The light that directs our path should also shape how we serve those around us. A verse that steadies us in trouble may later strengthen a discouraged friend. A command that corrects us may help us teach with greater gentleness and integrity. Let us come to Scripture not merely to gather information, but to hear our Father's voice, behold Christ more clearly, and be equipped for faithful living. We may not see the entire road ahead, but we can trust the One who does, and walk obediently in the light He supplies today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank Thee for giving us Thy Word as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Forgive us for the times we have trusted our feelings, followed the wisdom of the world, or resisted the truth Thou hast plainly shown us. Give us humble hearts to receive the Scriptures, attentive minds to understand them, and willing spirits to obey them. When the road ahead is uncertain, keep us from fear and impatience. Teach us to trust Thee for the next faithful step. May Thy truth guard us from sin, renew our minds, and equip us to encourage others. Help us to walk closely with Christ and to honour Thee in every decision we make today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
