Direct Your Prayer and Look Up

Before the demands of the day press upon us, the Lord invites us to seek Him in prayer. We may direct our requests unto Him with confidence, then look up in faith, trusting His wisdom, care, and perfect timing.

David begins the day with a settled confidence: “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD.” His words express more than a preference for morning prayer; they reveal a heart determined to seek God before facing the duties, uncertainties, and conflicts of the day. The morning often sets the direction of our thoughts. If we begin by listening to fear, attending to every demand, or carrying yesterday’s burdens alone, anxiety can quickly govern us. But when we first turn our hearts toward the Lord, we remember that the new day belongs to Him. He is already present, already sovereign, and already sufficient for everything that lies ahead. Morning prayer is not an attempt to persuade a distant God to notice us. It is the humble approach of a child to the Father who knows our needs and welcomes our voice.

David says, “in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee.” The word “direct” suggests purpose and order. Prayer should certainly include spontaneous cries from the heart, but it may also be deliberate and thoughtful. We can bring before God our worship, confession, thanksgiving, burdens, responsibilities, temptations, decisions, and concern for others. Rather than allowing troubled thoughts to circle endlessly within us, we may direct them toward the throne of grace. We do not pray merely to ease our emotions; we pray because the living God hears and answers according to His perfect will. Through Christ, believers have access to the Father and may come with reverence and confidence. Each concern surrendered to Him becomes an opportunity to acknowledge our dependence upon His strength instead of trusting our own understanding.

The verse concludes with a vital expression of faith: “and will look up.” David did not present his requests and then continue as though everything depended upon him. He prayed and watched expectantly for the Lord’s direction. Looking up does not mean demanding an immediate answer or insisting that God act according to our preferred plan. It means waiting with confidence in His character. His answer may come through Scripture, wise counsel, changed circumstances, a closed door, patient endurance, or quiet peace while the difficulty remains. Faith keeps its eyes upon God rather than measuring His goodness by present appearances. As J. Oswald Chambers wrote, “Prayer imparts the power to walk and not faint.” Prayer prepares us not only to receive answers but also to continue faithfully when the road is long.

There will be mornings when prayer feels difficult. We may be tired, distracted, discouraged, or unsure what to say. Yet the strength of prayer does not rest in eloquence. The Lord desires truth in the inward parts, and a sincere cry offered in weakness is precious before Him. We can open His Word, praise Him for what it reveals about His character, confess known sin, and place the coming hours into His hands. Then we can rise to obey what He has already made clear. Prayer and obedience belong together: we direct our prayer unto God, look up for His help, and walk forward in faith. Whatever this day contains, we need not enter it alone. The Lord who hears our morning voice will remain faithful through every hour.

Prayer

O Lord, before I give my attention to the many demands of this day, I turn my heart toward Thee. Thank Thee for hearing my voice and welcoming me through the Lord Jesus Christ. Search me and forgive every known sin. Order my thoughts, govern my words, and guide each decision I must make. I place my burdens, responsibilities, and loved ones into Thy faithful hands. Keep me from anxiety, self-reliance, and hurried choices. Teach me to look up with patient faith, trusting Thy wisdom even when the answer is not yet clear. Give me strength to walk in obedience and not faint. May my life today honour Thee and show kindness to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
