Do Not Refuse His Voice

God’s reproof is an expression of mercy, calling us away from sin before its bitter consequences overtake us. When He speaks through His Word, we must not harden our hearts, but answer with humble repentance and willing obedience.

Proverbs 1 presents wisdom calling openly, earnestly, and patiently. God does not conceal His truth or leave sinners without warning. He stretches out His hand, offering counsel and correction to those walking toward destruction. Yet the people addressed in this passage repeatedly refused Him. They did not merely overlook His counsel through ignorance; they deliberately set it at nought and rejected His reproof. These solemn words show that unbelief is not simply a lack of information. It is a moral refusal to receive the truth God has made known. Every warning in Scripture is therefore an act of mercy. The Lord exposes sin because He calls sinners to turn from it before its consequences fully arrive.

The severity of this passage should not be softened. A time came when calamity overtook those who had continually rejected wisdom. The distress described was not random misfortune but the dreadful harvest of persistent rebellion. They wanted relief from the consequences of sin without repentance from sin itself. They called only after destruction had arrived, but the season of neglected opportunity had passed. Scripture elsewhere gives the same urgent warning: “To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15, KJV). God is patient and abundant in mercy, but His patience must never be mistaken for approval. Delayed judgment does not mean that sin is harmless or that His warnings may safely be ignored.

This passage calls us to examine how we respond when God’s Word corrects us. We may refuse His counsel openly, but we may also resist it quietly by postponing obedience, defending a cherished sin, or listening without acting. A neglected command does not become less authoritative with time. Repeated resistance can make the conscience increasingly dull, until truths that once disturbed us are easily dismissed. Charles H. Spurgeon observed, “A Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” Regularly opening Scripture is vital, but the purpose is not merely to complete a reading habit. We must approach the Bible ready to believe what God says, receive His reproof, confess our sin, and order our lives according to His wisdom.

The warning of Proverbs 1 should move us toward Christ, not toward despair. God’s call is still sounding wherever His Word is faithfully proclaimed. The proper response is not to presume upon tomorrow, but to repent and believe today. In Christ there is full forgiveness for every sinner who comes to Him in faith. Yet saving faith does not treat His voice lightly; it receives Him as both Saviour and Lord. If the Holy Spirit uses Scripture to uncover pride, bitterness, dishonesty, impurity, prayerlessness, or some neglected duty, do not silence that conviction. Thank God for caring enough to reprove you. Bring the matter honestly before Him, turn from what He condemns, and obey what He commands. The tender invitation and the solemn warning stand together: while God calls, we must hear and answer.

Prayer

Holy and righteous Father, thank Thee for speaking through Thy Word and for warning me when I begin to wander. Forgive me for the times I have resisted Thy counsel, delayed obedience, or treated Thy reproof lightly. Keep my heart tender before Thee, and deliver me from the pride that excuses sin. Search me, reveal what must be confessed, and grant me grace to turn from it without delay. Teach me to read the Scriptures with humility, faith, and a willingness to obey. Thank Thee for the mercy and forgiveness found in Jesus Christ. Help me to hear Thy voice today and to walk faithfully in Thy wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
