A Way in the Wilderness

God is not limited by the barrenness before us or bound by the failures behind us. When we surrender our way to Him, we may trust Him to open a path of obedience and provide what is needed for every step.

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old” does not mean that God’s people should forget His past faithfulness. In the preceding verses, the Lord reminded Israel of His mighty deliverance through the sea. Rather, they were not to become so fixed upon the past that they failed to recognize what He was about to do. Israel’s history contained both glorious deliverances and grievous failures, but neither yesterday’s victories nor yesterday’s sins could define the full measure of God’s present purpose. We may likewise become imprisoned by what has been—replaying disappointments, regretting failures, or assuming that God must always work as He did before. The Lord calls us to look to Him with renewed faith.

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?” God promised to bring His people home from captivity, accomplishing a deliverance so remarkable that it would be pictured as a way through the wilderness and rivers flowing in the desert. What appeared impassable to them was not impassable to Him. The wilderness could not hide His path, and the desert could not exhaust His provision. God’s new work did not mean that His character or truth had changed. The same faithful Lord who had redeemed His people before would act faithfully again, though His method would not be confined to their expectations. Our confidence must therefore rest not in familiar circumstances, but in the unchanging God who rules them.

A wilderness season can leave us uncertain about the next step. A desert season can expose how little strength and wisdom we possess in ourselves. Yet these very places teach us to depend upon the Lord rather than our own understanding. His promised way may not remove every difficulty immediately, but it will always lead in harmony with His Word. His rivers may come through sustaining grace, timely encouragement, correction from Scripture, help from fellow believers, or quiet strength to continue obeying when circumstances remain hard. We must not mistake God’s silence for His absence or a delayed answer for abandoned care. Even before we perceive the first green shoot, He may already be causing the new thing to spring forth.

A. W. Pink wrote, “Taking up my cross means a life voluntarily surrendered to God.” Such surrender is essential when God’s path differs from our preferred one. We cannot faithfully follow Him while insisting that He preserve every old plan, comfort, and expectation. Taking up the cross means yielding our will, refusing sinful shortcuts, and obeying the truth already given to us. The Lord who makes a way in the wilderness does not merely offer relief; He calls us to walk in the way He provides. Today, let us release our hold upon past failures, past successes, and predetermined outcomes. With Scripture before us and faith in our faithful God, we can take the next obedient step, trusting that He knows the whole road and will supply every needed grace.

Prayer

Faithful Lord, I praise Thee because no wilderness is too trackless and no desert too barren for Thy power. Forgive me for dwelling upon former failures, depending upon former victories, or demanding that Thou work according to my expectations. Help me to behold what Thou art doing and to recognize every path that agrees with Thy Word. Give me grace to surrender my plans, take up my cross, and follow Thee without sinful fear or resistance. Where I cannot see the whole way, teach me to trust Thy wisdom. Where I feel spiritually dry, sustain me with Thy truth and strengthen me to obey. Lead me in the way Thou hast appointed, and let my life bear witness to Thy unfailing faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Identify one past failure, disappointment, or personal plan that is hindering present obedience; surrender it to God in prayer, then take one specific step today that clearly agrees with His Word.
