Asking a Good Father

Saturday, 18 July 2026

Daily Verse

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” - Matthew 7:11, KJV

Thoughts for the Day

The Goodness of Our Heavenly Father

Our heavenly Father is not reluctant to hear His children when they ask according to His will. Let us come to Him with humble confidence, trusting that His gifts are always governed by perfect wisdom and love.

A Christian Voice

“O that my soul were wrap up in divine love, and my longing desires after God increased!” - David Brainerd

Daily Devotion

In Matthew 7:11, Christ gives us a precious encouragement concerning prayer: if sinful parents know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will our Father in heaven give good things to them that ask Him? The Lord is not cold, distant, or unwilling to bless His people. He delights in doing good, and His generosity flows from His perfect character. Even the best earthly love is only a small reflection of the goodness found in God.

Yet this promise does not teach us that prayer is a means of obtaining everything our natural desires demand. The Father gives good things—not necessarily the things we would choose, nor according to the timetable we would prefer. His wisdom sees what we cannot see, and His love sometimes answers by withholding what would harm us. A delayed answer is not evidence of indifference, and a refused request is not proof that God has abandoned us. The Father who gives knows what is truly good for His children.

This should give holy courage to our prayers. We need not approach God with empty religious formality or with the fear that we are disturbing Him. We may bring our needs, burdens, questions, and longings before Him honestly, while submitting them to His wise will. David Brainerd wrote, “O that my soul were wrap up in divine love, and my longing desires after God increased!” Such longing is a fitting preparation for prayer. The greatest gift we seek is not merely an answer from God, but God Himself—His presence, holiness, wisdom, and love.

When the Lord answers prayer, His goodness should lead us to worship rather than merely to move on to the next request. When He gives, we should give thanks. When He waits, we should continue trusting. When He redirects us, we should believe that His fatherly care has not changed. Today, let us ask boldly but not presumptuously, expectantly but not selfishly, and patiently but not passively. The Father in heaven is good, and every answer received from His hand is measured by love.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank Thee that Thou art good, wise, and loving in all Thy ways. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Thy care or judged Thy faithfulness by the answers I wanted. Teach me to bring my requests before Thee with humility and confidence, trusting Thy perfect wisdom. Purify my desires, that I may seek Thy glory above my own comfort and receive Thy gifts with gratitude. Help me to wait patiently when Thou dost delay, to submit willingly when Thou dost say no, and to praise Thee for every mercy. Draw my heart nearer to Thee, and increase my longing for Thy presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Walk in faith today

Before making one important request today, spend a few quiet minutes thanking God for His goodness, then present the request to Him and deliberately surrender the outcome to His wisdom.
