The Danger of a Divided Heart

Thursday, 16 July 2026

Daily Verse

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” - Revelation 3:15-16, KJV

Thoughts for the Day

Wholehearted Before Christ

Christ does not call us to admire Him from a distance while reserving our hearts for other loves. His warning against lukewarm faith is also a gracious summons to repent and return to wholehearted devotion.

A Christian Voice

“Love is the only fire that is hot enough to melt the iron obstinacy of a creature’s will.” - Alexander Maclaren

Daily Devotion

The words of Christ to the church at Laodicea are searching because they expose a condition that can exist beneath an outwardly religious life. Lukewarmness is not open rejection of Jesus, but neither is it wholehearted surrender to Him. It is a faith that is content with profession without costly obedience, Christian language without spiritual hunger, and outward association with the church without inward dependence upon Christ. The Lord, who knows our works, sees not only what others see but the true temperature of the heart.

Christ's warning is severe because lukewarm devotion dishonours the worth of the Saviour. He is not a part of life to be fitted around personal comfort, ambition, entertainment, or the approval of others. He is Lord. A divided heart may still attend worship, speak of grace, and maintain a respectable appearance, yet quietly resist the searching claims of God's Word. The danger is that familiarity with Christian things can be mistaken for fellowship with Christ. We must therefore ask not merely whether we call ourselves believers, but whether we are yielding ourselves to Him in faith, repentance, love, and obedience.

The answer is not to manufacture emotional excitement or to seek a dramatic religious experience. Wholehearted devotion grows as we behold the holiness and mercy of Christ, receive His correction humbly, and return to the ordinary means by which He strengthens His people: prayer, Scripture, worship, fellowship, and faithful service. As Alexander Maclaren wrote, “Love is the only fire that is hot enough to melt the iron obstinacy of a creature’s will.” The love of Christ does not leave us comfortable in compromise. It softens our resistance and moves us to say, “Lord, have Thy way in me.”

Today, let the Lord's warning lead you to honest repentance rather than defensiveness. Consider where you have become spiritually indifferent, where obedience has been delayed, or where another love has crowded Christ from first place. Bring that matter into His light and ask Him for a renewed heart. He does not expose lukewarmness to destroy the repentant, but to awaken us from spiritual sleep. The Saviour who rebukes also calls His people back to fellowship, that our faith may be living, our witness truthful, and our devotion worthy of His name.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Thou knowest my works and the true condition of my heart. Forgive me for the times I have been content with outward religion while withholding areas of my life from Thee. Deliver me from spiritual indifference, divided affection, and delayed obedience. Kindle in me a sincere love for Thy person, Thy Word, and Thy people. Teach me to repent quickly, to receive Thy correction humbly, and to follow Thee faithfully when obedience is costly. May Thy grace melt my stubborn will and make me glad to surrender every part of my life to Thy rule. Keep me from trusting in appearances, and make my faith genuine, steadfast, and fruitful. In Thy holy name, Amen.

Walk in faith today

Set aside fifteen quiet minutes today to ask the Lord to reveal one area of compromise or spiritual indifference; write it down, confess it plainly in prayer, and take one specific step of obedience before the day ends.
