Asking the Father Who Gives Good Things
Daily Verse
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” - Matthew 7:11, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
The Goodness of Our Father
Our heavenly Father is never reluctant to hear His children, and His answers always flow from perfect wisdom and love. We may ask Him with confidence, trusting not merely in the gift we desire, but in the goodness of the One who gives.
A Christian Voice
“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” - Augustine of Hippo, Confessions
Daily Devotion
Jesus teaches us to pray by directing our attention to the character of God: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” The force of His words rests in the phrase “how much more.” Even sinful parents ordinarily desire to provide what is beneficial for their children. How much more, then, can the children of God trust their heavenly Father, whose wisdom is never mistaken, whose resources are never exhausted, and whose love is never corrupted by selfishness? Prayer is not an attempt to persuade an unwilling God to become generous. It is the believing approach of a child to a Father who is already good.
Yet the promise of good things must be understood according to the Father’s perfect judgment, not merely according to our immediate wishes. A child may sincerely ask for something that a loving parent knows would be harmful, premature, or distracting. The refusal is not evidence of indifference; it may be an expression of deeper care. Likewise, our Father sometimes answers quickly, sometimes requires us to wait, and sometimes withholds the particular thing requested. In every case, His goodness remains unchanged. Faith does not insist that God prove His love by granting our preferred outcome. Faith rests in the assurance that He sees what we cannot see and gives what truly serves His holy purpose in us.
This confidence should make our prayers both bold and submissive. We may speak honestly about our needs, fears, hopes, disappointments, and unanswered questions. We need not hide behind formal words, for our Father already knows us completely. At the same time, prayer brings our desires beneath His wisdom. We ask earnestly, but we also allow Him to correct what we seek and reshape what we love. Augustine wrote, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” Our deepest need is not merely for changed circumstances but for God Himself. His greatest gifts draw us nearer to Him, teach us dependence, form Christlike character, and quiet our restless hearts in His presence.
Therefore, do not measure the faithfulness of prayer only by visible results. The act of coming to the Father is itself a confession that He is good, that we are dependent, and that our lives belong in His hands. Continue asking, but also watch for the good things He may be giving in forms you did not expect: patience during delay, wisdom for a difficult decision, strength to obey, conviction of sin, peace amid uncertainty, or help through another believer. A closed door may protect you; a season of waiting may prepare you; an altered plan may lead you into deeper fellowship with God. Bring your request plainly today, then rest in the Father’s character. He will never answer with carelessness, cruelty, or error. Whatever His answer, it comes from perfect goodness.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank Thee that Thy goodness is perfect and Thy wisdom cannot fail. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Thy love because an answer was delayed or different from what I desired. Teach me to come before Thee honestly, boldly, and humbly, trusting that Thou knowest what is truly good. Correct my desires where they are selfish, strengthen me while I wait, and help me recognize the gifts Thou art already providing. Above every earthly blessing, give me a heart that rests in Thee and delights in Thy presence. May every answer to prayer draw me nearer to Thee and make me more obedient to Thy will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Walk in faith today
Write down one specific request you have been carrying, pray about it plainly today, and then add one sentence surrendering both the timing and the outcome to your heavenly Father’s wisdom.
