The LORD Knows Them That Trust in Him
Daily Verse
“The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” - Nahum 1:7, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
Our Strong Hold in Trouble
When trouble comes, the world offers many refuges, but only the LORD is a true strong hold. He does not merely see us from afar; He knows intimately those who trust in Him. This knowledge is not cold facts but covenant care — He who is our fortress is also our Father.

Nahum's prophecy is a short book, a fierce oracle against Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. It is filled with images of divine judgment, of whirlwind and storm, of mountains quaking and the earth burning at God's presence. Yet in the midst of that terrifying storm, Nahum 1:7 stands as an island of serene peace: "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him." Amid the thunder of judgment upon Assyria, God remembers His own. The same fire that devours His enemies is a light that warms His children.
The Hebrew word translated "strong hold" means a fortress, a high place of safety, a refuge that cannot be breached by any enemy. The psalmist confesses, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). But notice the ground of this safety: it is not our own strength, not our own wisdom, not our own righteousness. It is the goodness of God. "The LORD is good" — this is the foundation beneath our feet when everything else gives way. His goodness is not an abstract attribute but an active commitment to those who belong to Him. Because He is good, He will be our strong hold. Because He is good, He knows us, and being known by Him is the safest place in all creation.
This knowledge is profoundly personal. The verb "knoweth" in Scripture is never mere intellectual awareness. It is intimate, covenantal, experiential. The Shepherd knows His sheep, not as statistics but by name. Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine" (John 10:14). To be known by God in this way is to be held, kept, and preserved through every trial. The day of trouble may come — it will come, for Jesus Himself promised, "In the world ye shall have tribulation" (John 16:33). But for the one who trusts in Him, that day is not a defeat. It is the very occasion in which God shows Himself as the strong hold He has always promised to be.
Oswald J. Smith wrote, "The light that shines the farthest will shine the brightest at home." If we truly trust God as our strong hold in trouble, that trust must first be real in the small, ordinary moments — at home, with family, in the private trials that no one else sees. The man who trusts God in the secret place will find Him faithful in the public storm. Today, let us examine ourselves: do we run to the LORD as our strong hold in small troubles, or do we rely on our own devices? The same God who was a refuge for His people when Nineveh fell is your refuge now. He is good. He is strong. And He knows you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are good — not because my circumstances are pleasant, but because Your character is unchanging. You are my strong hold in the day of trouble, and I confess that I often forget to run to You first. Forgive me for trusting my own resources and forgetting that You know me, that You hold me, that You have numbered every trouble before it arrived. Teach me to rest in the knowledge that being known by You is my greatest security. When the storm comes, let me not be found trusting in walls of my own making, but hiding in You alone. Let the light of Your goodness shine in my home today, that those closest to me may see that You are indeed my refuge. In the name of Jesus, my strong hold and my Redeemer. Amen.
Walk in faith today
Today, before you respond to the next frustration, disappointment, or unexpected difficulty — whether at work, at home, or in your own thoughts — pause for a single breath and whisper silently, 'The LORD is good, and He knows me.' Let that truth be your first reaction, not your last resort.
