Come and Find Rest in Christ
Daily Verse
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” - Matthew 11:28, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
Rest for the Weary
Jesus does not summon the strong and self-sufficient, but the weary and heavy laden. His rest is not an escape from labour, but a peace found in His presence that sustains us through every burden.
A Christian Voice
“I am a Christian solely and entirely because of the grace of God and not because of anything that I have thought or said or done.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Daily Devotion
The words of our Lord in Matthew 11:28 are among the most tender in all of Scripture. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." These are not the words of a distant lawgiver, but of a compassionate Saviour who knows the weight we carry. The burden of sin, the weariness of striving to earn God's favour, the fatigue of daily trials—all of these He invites us to bring to Him. The rest He offers is not merely the cessation of activity, but a deep, soul-restoring peace that comes from being in right relation with God through Him.
We often mistake rest for retreat—a withdrawal from the world and its demands. But Christ's rest is different. It is a rest found in the midst of labour, a peace that passes understanding even when the storm rages. To come to Christ is to lay down the heavy load of self-justification, to cease from trying to make ourselves acceptable to God by our own efforts. It is to accept that He has done all that is required, and that in Him we are complete. As Martyn Lloyd-Jones so rightly observed, "I am a Christian solely and entirely because of the grace of God and not because of anything that I have thought or said or done." Our rest is anchored not in our performance, but in His finished work.
Yet how prone we are to take up the burden again! We drag it back from the foot of the cross, insisting that we must somehow contribute to our own salvation or prove our worth. This is the weariness of the flesh, the restlessness of a heart that has not fully trusted in the grace of God. The Apostle Paul reminds us that "we which have believed do enter into rest" (Hebrews 4:3). Faith is the door; Christ is the rest. Every moment we turn from our own strivings and look to Him, we enter afresh into that Sabbath peace which He alone can give.
Beloved, if you are labouring today under the weight of sin, of anxiety, of a relentless drive to measure up, hear the voice of your Saviour. He does not scold you for your weariness; He invites you to Himself. The rest He gives is not a temporary reprieve but an eternal gift. Take His yoke upon you, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light. In Him, you will find rest for your soul.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come to You weary and heavy laden, confessing that I have often tried to carry burdens You never intended me to bear. Thank You that in Christ I have a true rest—not earned by my efforts, but given freely by Your grace. Teach me to abide in Him, to lay down every weight of self-reliance, and to trust fully in the finished work of the cross. When anxiety or pride rise up, draw me back to the feet of Jesus, where my soul finds peace. May I live this day not in restless striving, but in the quiet confidence of Your love. In the precious name of Jesus, amen.
Walk in faith today
Identify one burden you have been carrying alone—whether a worry, a sin struggle, or a task you feel inadequate for—and deliberately bring it to the Lord in prayer right now. Then write it down on a note or in your journal as a tangible act of leaving it at His feet, and resist picking it back up for the rest of the day.
