Following the Fisher of Men
Daily Verse
“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” - Matthew 4:19, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
The Call to Fish for Men
Jesus calls us not merely to believe, but to follow—to walk in His steps and share in His mission. When He says, 'I will make you fishers of men,' He promises to transform ordinary lives into instruments of eternal purpose.

Daily Devotion
There is a world of difference between admiring Christ and following Him. In Matthew 4:19, the Lord does not issue an invitation to observe from a distance; He issues a summons to come after Him. 'Follow me' is the imperative that precedes every promise. It is the first step of discipleship—a step of trust, surrender, and total reorientation. Peter and Andrew did not negotiate terms or ask for a brochure; they left their nets and followed. Their response reminds us that the cost of discipleship is everything we hold, but the gain is Christ Himself.
'And I will make you fishers of men.' Notice the divine craftsmanship in that promise. Jesus does not say, 'Go and be fishers of men'—as though the power were in us. He says, 'I will make you.' The making is His work. He takes uneducated fishermen, timid souls, broken failures, and stubborn hearts, and He fashions them into instruments of the gospel. The calling to reach souls is not a burden we must bear in our own strength; it is a work that God Himself accomplishes through us as we abide in Him. The net may be weak, but the Fisherman is mighty.
C. T. Studd, the great missionary pioneer, once declared, 'Forward Ever, Backward Never!' Those words capture the relentlessness of the gospel advance and the perseverance required of every disciple. Following Christ is not a one-time decision but a daily posture of moving forward in obedience. There will be days when the nets come up empty, when hearts are hard, and when the way seems obscure. Yet we are called to press on—not because of our own resolve, but because the One who called us is faithful. He who began the work of making us fishers of men will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
The call still sounds today. Christ stands on the shore of your ordinary life and says, 'Follow me.' Perhaps you feel unqualified, too young, too old, too weak, or too sinful. Remember: He does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called. The same Jesus who made fishermen into apostles can make you a vessel of His grace. The question is not whether you are ready, but whether you are willing. Lay down your net—whatever it is that holds you back—and follow Him. Forward ever, backward never.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I hear Your call to follow You, and I confess that I often cling to my own nets—my plans, my comforts, my fears. Forgive me for the times I have admired You from a distance instead of walking with You daily. Take my ordinary life and make it extraordinary for Your kingdom. Teach me to be a fisher of men, not by my own eloquence or strength, but by the quiet power of Your Spirit working through me. Give me courage to move forward and never backward, trusting that You who began this good work in me will carry it to completion. In Your precious and powerful name I pray, Amen.
Walk in faith today
Identify one person in your life who does not yet know Christ and commit to praying for them daily this week. Then, before Sunday, send them a simple, encouraging message—not a sermon, but a genuine gesture of care—and trust God to open a door for the gospel in His time.
