Let Your Light So Shine
Daily Verse
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
Light for the Father's Glory
Our Lord commands us to let our light shine before men, not to draw attention to ourselves, but so that others may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Every act of obedience is an opportunity to redirect praise upward, away from our own merit and toward the One who works in us.

Daily Devotion
Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Sermon on the Mount, sets before His disciples a striking image: 'Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.' (Matthew 5:14). Then, in verse 16, He gives the charge that has echoed through every generation of believers: 'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.' These words are not merely a suggestion or a noble ideal; they are the calling of every soul that has been rescued from darkness.
Notice the direction of the glory. Christ does not say that men should glorify you for your good works. The natural heart craves the praise of others, and we are prone to perform our righteousness before men precisely to be seen of them. But the Lord redirects the entire purpose of our outward conduct: the good works are to be visible, yes, but they are a window through which men behold the Father. When we shine, we do so as the moon reflects the sun, having no light of our own. The moment we seek the praise of men for our service, we have already received our reward, and the Father is robbed of the glory that is due His name alone.
Oswald Chambers wrote, 'No sin is worse than the sin of self-pity, because it removes God from the throne of our lives.' How searching is that insight! Self-pity is a subtle darkness that extinguishes our light. When we nurse grievances, rehearse our sacrifices, or dwell upon how little we are appreciated, we are effectively declaring that God's providence and grace are insufficient. We take our eyes off the Father and fix them upon ourselves. A self-pitying saint cannot shine, for his light is choked by the fog of his own wounded pride. The remedy is not to try harder to be cheerful, but to repent of the unbelief that says God owes us better treatment. When we enthrone God once again — acknowledging that He is good, He is sovereign, and He owes us nothing but has given us everything in Christ — the light returns, and we can serve without demanding recognition.
Let us then ask the Lord to search our hearts today. Are there corners where we are hiding our light, afraid of what others might think? Are there areas where we are shining only to be seen and praised? Or worse, have we allowed self-pity to dim the grace that ought to radiate from us? The world around us does not need another display of human virtue; it needs to see the supernatural fruit of a life transformed by the gospel. Let us shine — not for our own glory, but for the glory of our Father in heaven. Let our good works be deeds of love, kindness, honesty, and patience, done in the quiet strength that the Spirit supplies. And when men see them, may they not say, 'What a wonderful person,' but rather, 'What a wonderful God.'
Prayer
Father in heaven, You alone are worthy of all glory and honour. Forgive me for the many times I have sought the praise of men rather than Your approval, and forgive me for the times I have hidden my light out of fear or nursed self-pity in my heart. By Your Spirit, rekindle in me a pure and steady flame that shines only for You. Let every good work I do today be a window through which others see Your goodness, Your mercy, and Your power. Keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, the true Light, and let my life be a reflection of His grace. In His precious name I pray. Amen.
Walk in faith today
Before the end of today, identify one small act of kindness or service you can perform for someone else without telling anyone about it — not even the recipient needs to know it was you. Do it secretly for the Father who sees in secret, and let that hidden obedience be your light today.
