Shining for the Father's Glory
Daily Verse
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
Light for the Father's Glory
Christ has kindled His light in you — not to be hidden, but to shine through your conduct. When others see your good works and trace them back to your Father in heaven, you fulfill your calling as a child of light.

Daily Devotion
There is a subtle temptation that every believer faces when they begin to walk in obedience: the temptation to let the eyes of men become the goal. We want to be seen as good, as faithful, as fruitful. And yet our Lord Jesus sets the matter straight in a single verse. The light that He has kindled in you is not for your own glory. It is not even primarily for the benefit of those who see it — though they are blessed by it. The ultimate end of every good work is this: that your Father which is in heaven may be glorified.
Consider the context. In the preceding verses, Jesus calls His disciples the salt of the earth and the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel. So the command is clear: let your light shine. But the purpose clause that follows is everything. The light is not meant to draw attention to itself, but to the One who is the source of all light. When your neighbour sees your patience in trial, your honesty in business, your kindness to the ungrateful, your forgiveness when you have been wronged — if he is honest, he will not simply admire you. He will be compelled to glorify your Father.
This is the great secret of Christlike living: the more self-effacing the disciple becomes, the more the Father is magnified. John the Baptist understood this when he said, 'He must increase, but I must decrease.' A light does not draw attention to the bulb or the flame; it illuminates what is around it. So your good works are not meant to build a monument to your own piety. They are windows through which the grace and power of God may be seen. A life that consistently does good — not for applause, not for reward, but out of love for Christ and obedience to His Word — is a life that points beyond itself to the throne of grace.
C. T. Studd, that great missionary pioneer who gave away a fortune to follow Christ into the hardest places on earth, once wrote: 'Forward Ever, Backward Never!' He knew that the Christian life is not a posture of retreat or self-preservation. It is a constant, resolute advance in the light of God's call. Every good work you do today — whether it is a kind word, a patient response, a sacrificial gift, or a faithful hour of prayer — is a step forward in that advance. And the glory does not stop with you. It ascends to the Father, who sees in secret and rewards openly. Shine, then, not for the praise of men, but for the everlasting praise of your Father in heaven.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You alone are worthy of all glory, honour, and praise. I confess that my heart too often seeks the approval of men rather than the smile of Your countenance. Forgive me. By Your Spirit, kindle in me a light that is pure, steady, and self-forgetting. Let my good works today — in the home, in the workplace, in every hidden moment — be windows through which others see Your grace and are drawn to worship You. Keep me from pride when I am useful and from despair when I am weak. May Christ increase, and may I decrease, until the whole earth is filled with Your glory. In the name of Jesus, my Lord and my Light, Amen.
Walk in faith today
Before the end of today, perform one good deed in secret — something kind that no one else will know you did — and silently thank the Father as you do it, offering that act as a small sacrifice of praise to Him alone.
