All Things Through Christ

Daily Verse

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” - Philippians 4:13, KJV

Thoughts for the Day

Strength in Christ Alone

Paul's declaration in Philippians 4:13 is not a promise of worldly success, but a testimony of sustaining grace. When we are emptied of self-sufficiency, Christ's power fills every weakness with His sufficient strength.

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” - Corrie ten Boom

Daily Devotion

Philippians 4:13 is one of the most beloved and most misunderstood verses in Scripture. Many have taken it as a blank cheque for personal ambition — a promise that with enough faith we can accomplish any goal we set our minds to. But we must read it in its context. Paul writes from a Roman prison, having learned contentment in hunger and abundance alike. He is not claiming power to achieve, but power to endure. The "all things" he speaks of are not feats of human greatness, but the full range of circumstances — want and plenty, weakness and strength — through which Christ sustains His servant.

The key to this verse lies in the little word "through." Paul does not say he can do all things alongside Christ, or with Christ's help in a general sense. He says "through Christ which strengtheneth me." The Greek word translated "strengtheneth" carries the idea of being infused with power from within — Christ Himself becoming the enabling life of the believer. This is the same Jesus who told Paul, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Paul's boast, then, is not in his own capacity but in Christ's sufficiency poured into his frailty.

Corrie ten Boom knew this reality firsthand. Hidden from the Nazis in her family's Haarlem home, then imprisoned in a concentration camp, she learned to trust an unknown future to a known God. Her words echo Paul's confidence: the God who has revealed Himself in Scripture and in the person of Jesus Christ is trustworthy, even when tomorrow is hidden from our sight. We do not need to know what lies ahead when we know the One who holds the future. This is not blind optimism but settled faith — the same faith that enabled Paul to sing in prison, to give thanks in hunger, and to declare that nothing could separate him from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Beloved reader, what unknown future faces you today? A health concern, a strained relationship, a financial uncertainty, a season of waiting? Bring it before the Lord and confess your inability. Then receive His strength — not for escape from the difficulty, but for faithful endurance within it. The same Christ who strengthened Paul in a Roman dungeon and sustained Corrie ten Boom in Ravensbrück is with you now. His grace is sufficient. His power is made perfect in your weakness. You can do all things — not because you are strong, but because Christ in you is stronger than anything the world can bring against you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess how often I try to live in my own strength, grasping for control over a future I cannot see. Forgive my self-reliance and my fear. Teach me the secret of contentment that Paul learned — to draw every breath of my spiritual life from Christ, who is my strength and my sufficiency. When I am weak, let me not hide my weakness but offer it to You as a vessel for Your power. Help me to trust my unknown future to You, the God who has never failed me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Walk in faith today

Identify one circumstance in your life right now that feels overwhelming or uncertain. Write it down on a card, and below it write: 'I can do this through Christ who strengthens me.' Place the card where you will see it today, and whenever fear or anxiety rises, read it aloud as a declaration of faith — not in your own ability, but in Christ's sustaining power in you.
